04 F-250 fuel gauge

Trying to fix the fuel gauge on my 04 F-250 diesel. Since I bought the truck it hasn't worked. When I hook up a battery charger to the truck (crank no start to prime the oil rail after an injector replacement) it would read about 1/8 of a tank when it is full. I removed the #2, 31, and 45(???) fuses and re-installed them. Now with a full tank I get the 1/8 reading whereas before it would be reading pretty much negative 1/4 with the fuel light on. After the truck runs for 30 seconds or so the gauge drops down as low as it can go. I can't get the connector from the sending unit to the wire harness undone without fear of breaking it.

Where else should I look for the problem before I pull the bed and dump a couple hundred bucks into a new fuel sending unit?

It could be build up on the sensor in the tank causing it to stick. Mine (04 F250 6.0L) would do that occasionally. Problem #2 is
that the fuel pickup line can develop cracks so if you do go into the tank check that out too. Been there too.

My 08 f150 with 30,000 miles had to have the sender replaced in the tank. That truck is now long gone.

My 05 F250 did the same thing. I read on line to just disconnect the batteries, clean terminals and reassemble. I thought ya right but worth a try. It worked, no fuel gauge problem since.
I am sure there are other reasons for a faulty fuel gauge but trying this is free. Good luck

I had the batteries disconnected for about a free weeks while I replaced the oil cooler. Made no change.
