Sickle bar mower break down

So I was cutting hay when all at once the bar clogged up and it sounded odd. Stop PTO and back up and found the bar is broken. Br and the ball piece both broken and one section missing. Guess after I cool off I'll be pulling he bar and then welding it back together. Had hoped to get a good bit of hay down but I guess the mower had different ideas

Ben there with a break in the same place. I keep a spare cutting bar ready to go, same for a spare pittman stick.

Check to see that one of the outer hold-down clips is not too tight. If it is, this causes the back of the sickle to "bend" on every stroke and may cause early failure at a section hole.

Hi, we always had another bar sharp and ready to go. Maybe you hit a tether pin or something. Ed will Oliver lbc

all depends on what you are cutting. alfalfa brome or timothy cut very easy. it is the short thick grasses like fescu make for a hard pull on the sickle, plus the sections and guards if worn contribute to that problem. plus run at proper speed.

Ya I forgot I had repaired the one that broke last year and when I went to fix this one I saw it standing in the corner so took it and put it on and went back to work till one of the guard bolts I had just replaced had loosened up so I called it a day. Plan to go out in the morning and finish what I was trying to get done today. Then I'll rebuild the one that broek so it will be ready if I need it

I had forgotten about the bar I had fixed last year and when I went to fix this one I saw it in the corner so put it on and cut a bit more till a guard bolt got loss so gave up for the day and will hit it again tomorrow

With sickle bar mowers,i kept 3 sickles with me,about every 15 acres id change sickles.it just takes light touch with angle grinder to keep em sharp.less breakage.if your mower is set correct a sickle should slide in the hold downs and guards easy,if not adjust till it does.

Good excuse to get yourself a good (Tar River for one) drum mower. They don't have sickle bars, few parts to go bad, reliable machine, cut anything, any time, rain or shine, tall or short, thick or thin, straight field or XYZ shaped. You'll never ever go back.

Don't have the $$ to do so and why do it for 15-20 acres of hay. Plus it would take a tractor like my IH584 to run it and I use my BA with the sickle mower and use very little gas to boot

Hast makes waste as the saying goes. Learned years ago to test things out before going whole hog and I have always done the hay a little at a time so as not to have a lot down just in case it gets rained on
