Broke another sickle bar

So yesterday I broke the bar on the A-16 sickle bar mower. So I put in the spare bar I had fixed last year and I was almost done with what I wanted to get mowed and the spare broke. So I guess this afternoon I will be welding 2 bars back together plus I think since I have the parts I'll make a 3rd bar. I'll probably make the 3rd bar before I even try to fix the other 2 since it will not have a weld and the other 2 will have to be welded.
I did jump up a deer while I was mowing and if it had not jumped up I would not have known it was even there.

I think the reason I have had trouble this year is all the rain we have had has made the hay a whole lot ticker then a normal year. Some of the grass is very thick and tall and the same with the clovers

I remember those days of hammering, plugging an eventually broken mower knives. Best money i ever spent was a 40 year old, $1500 New Holland haybine. It cuts so much better and easier than the old NH mower that I'd never consider going back.

If you pull it with a WD you can just slip the hand clutch to slow the ground speed down. Won't hurt a thing.

When you weld a sickle bar that broke near the head I was taught to put the pitman head on the bar and add whatever length needed to the end of the bar. Sell strain on the weld if it is only a foot or so welded on.

Do you have a tractor that will travel slower? I'm afraid you're going to have nothing but trouble with your current arrangement.

Old it might help to not take a full cut or may be raise sickle bar up just a bit. Best thing I ever done was sell my horses so I need not worry about hay had them most of my married life. Randy

I use to cut hay with a NH460 but it pretty much blew it self apart a few years back and I figure the cost to fix it was not worth it. The cable that keeps the rollers tight broke and in turn messed it up pretty good

Just my 2 cents. The industrial metal supply place near me has some really long strap steel. Can you get a really long piece and make your own knife? Just wondering. The longest I can remember is 20ft. and they bring it to you on one of those crazy looking off side cabs truck.

Never have seen where welding sickle bars would hold up very well. What brand is the mower you should be able to find someone with some old sickle assemblies around.I have several dozen old
AC and NH sickle assemblies. Most are better than I see some people on here think they have sharp one.

I know when our hay got heavy due to conditions similar to now we had lots of trouble similar to what you're having.

If your using a side mount mower it must be what 5 ft cut? Im thinking you need to look at your cutterbar again.it should trip before breaking the sickle.
Ive cut hay with our john deere number 5 with 7 ft bar so thick it took 3 days to dry in hot summer.it would trip the cutter bar but never broke a sickle..loose pitman jaws and worn sickle head balls come to mind

Well, I can't imagine trying to mow that slow, I would go nuts. I got one of those mowers, and 4 or 5 extra bars. Would give you a couple, but too far away. Mine 6 ft. cut I think.

Are you running serrated sections or smooth ones? I just cut weeds and grass with mine and the serrated sections seem to hold up a lot better when cutting that kind of stuff.

pretty sure there is other issues with that. and if its breaking in the same repaired spot then you know what the problem is.
