Made a spare for my spare sickle bar

So since this year seems to be the year of broken bars I just finished making a spare spare sickle bar. I have a few old bars laying around so figured why not make another one. All new blade but some are new old stock that I have had hanging on the wall for a few years so a bit rusty but that should not matter and the rust will not stay long after i start using it

I?ve got one new sickle and one used sickle as spares I hope I can get through the other half of mowing without swapping In my other new one

I don?t claim to be special but I have never broken one. We had a pull type Case behind the JD 70. I thought I was uptown when I cut hay for the neighbors,MF 165 diesel with a mounted Dyno Balance mower.

We used to break sickles with the Deere #5 but I have never broken a sickle with the 100 series balanced head IH I use now. We used to have two Deere sickles ready to go for the #5. When I was on the harvest we had 8 thirty foot heads to keep going. The guys on the crew would gang up and have a timed contest replacing the sections on a 30' sickle. I think 20 minutes is the record. Each man had a designated task. They got to be pretty good at it.

Kocsh uses either a Deere or old IH heads. Both work as long as your first 2 hold downs have enough clearance.
When I was mowing meadows I changed to sharp sickles twice a day. Ran smooth double guards and under searated sections.
What I found that broke heads was either a worn bar or wear plates not adjusted up. That?s taking into account that the sickle is timed correctly.
I would hate to guess how many acres I have mowed with a sickle mower. Lots of them not making a ton per acre, but some going as high as 4 ton.

But like my buddy that works at the parts counter in the local NH place says when I hit something with my NH 456 mower it'll cost less than $100 to get going again when someone hits something
with their disc mower it'll be $1500.
