I recently bought a toro groundsmater 4000, this is a large Toro with a Kubota 48 hp motor and 11' cut. It seems to run fine and mow well last year. Leaked quite a bit of hydraulic oil over the winter, SW MI . Oil is low and I need to bring it up. Toro manual makes a big deal about correct hyd oil. and recommends Toro oil or Mobil 424 . A website with commercial operators suggests usng and states they use ISO 68. difference- 46 is straight 10 w and 68 is straight 30w. some others have weighed in as using multi weight 10-30. I read that part of the recommendation is based on it being a low sulfer oil? I would prefer to use generic from local TSC or NAPA or any parts stores. What say you? people with more oil experience and knowledge?/

Here's a link that gives some alternatives.

The more important spec is the GL-4. That gives the additive package.

The SAE 80 is the weight. SAE 80 gear oil is aprox 20-30 weight engine oil. That puts it in 46-68 hyd oil range of viscosity, but hyd oil may not meet the GL-4 requirement.

GL-4 is a yellow metals safe, EP additive.
