Big Boy is on a Midwest tour as we speak. It is in Iowa this week following the Union Pacific line so I am going to go watch it come through. The schedule is on line.---Tee

I'm thinking about going to try to see it in Duluth next weekend.

(quoted from post at 14:49:01 07/14/19) Does anyone know; is the rear engine running?
Why wouldn't it be?

Your referring to the second set of drivers.

No problem that I'm aware of.

Looking closely at the videos, I have not seen any evidence that the rear engine is running.

Usually there is some leakage around the rod seal on any steam engine. As you can see there is always steam coming from around the front seal, never see any on the rear.

In one of the videos, I believe it was the very first test run, the engine was puffing a LOT of steam from the left front, to the point it stopped and several workers gathered around looking at it. It then returned to the shop.

I see what your saying, but have not read any reports of it not running.

Remember it was cooler then than now, so steam don't show up as much.

They did redo the packing's and solved the leaks.
Ed is always opening the blow off water drains on the cylinders upon staring from sitting.

She stops about a mile from me at the grade crossing my place is on. That thing is HUGE. Wanna feel small? Stand along side it; it's intimidating! Don't care much for its whistle, though. Not like the 'teakettles' that I recall from my misspent youth.

That will run right past my house on Friday morning looks like. Don't think I'll be able to see it tho. Maybe on Sunday when it goes back down.

Our daughter works in corporate law in UP's home office in Omaha. She showed me some good pictures on her cell phone this afternoon with her standing beside 4014.

I asked her to email the pics to me, but they haven't showed up yet. I'll post some if/when she does.

It will be southbound on Monday Jon.

If one wants to get up close and personal to a Big Boy, head for Denver. The poorly publicized Forney Transportation museum on the north side of town has 4005 indoors. Fully operational, but not in operation, you can climb the stairs to the platform between the coaler and the engine cab.

It is ginormous. Supposed to generate between 6000-7000HP depending on steam pressure, and how tight it is.(yes, I know steam trains aren't really rated in HP)

Yes
Extra Water.

it can consumes 10 to 12,000 gal. a hour in hard running.

The coal tender is converted to oil and usually hold enough to
make it to scheduled fueling stops.
