phone area code

Now days it is common for some one who has moved to another state to keep there old number on there cell phone but yet be in your state. Had that today with a person wanting a couple of kittens I had and there number was 9?? which is not a Missouri area code but yet they where here in MO

715 is my area code in WI. If I get a cell phone here locally and then move to another state, my phone number will not need to be changed.

Just google the area code. That is a very old code from 1947? Area codes almost mean nothing anymore. Now they are just a way to generate more numbers for devices.

I made an inquiry to a business in New Mexico on behalf of someone in Texas. The guy has been calling me back and leaving messages from various different area codes including my own state, and from local exchanges.

Cell phones, VOI (Voice Over Internet) providers, and more and more land line providers let you keep your old phone number when you move to a new location. That eliminates the need to provide updated phone numbers to friends, family, customers, the businesses you work with, etc, and all the confusion that goes with changing phone numbers. It's very handy for snow birds that relocate twice a year.

I agree, now that we have computerized phone systems, area codes have no meaning. On the original systems, there were rotary relays that would rotate based on each number to route the call. The progressive numbers would funnel/route the call into the next hardwired line.

My sons Colorado phone number with a higher area code has been the main number for his business that he started in Michigan over 10 years ago where he has been living. As mentioned, area codes don't really mean much anymore. Everyone pretty much just takes their phone number with them as the move around the country.

Same phone company land line in 2 different towns 10 mile apart in same county. Could not keep the number I had for over 30+ years, had to get new number. And I have to keep a land line for my captioning phone for hard of hearing.

Agree that area codes do not mean much anymore.

My oldest sister lives on west side of the Rocky Mountains - but her area code is from northern MN, as she pays to be on her son and daughter-in-law's phone plan.

Thank goodness the AC doesn't mean anything location-wise any more. Neither do the first three numbers of new SS#. No one should be able to be traced by any such number.

That does not preclude it from being a scam. It only makes it plausible that it is not a scam, which is great for the scammers.

Regardless of what's said here, area codes do still have meaning. They originate from a specific area of the country. The whole notion of "portable" phone numbers is still relatively new so it's still relatively rare to find someone with an out of area phone number.

There are way easier ways to trace someone besides their area code, such as, with their full number. With access to the right resources you can locate someone to within a few feet with their full number. Often times simply putting their phone number into google is all that is necessary.
