I don't love Amazon but they're darn good sometimes

We have some 1950's vintage American Standard toilets, and the consumable part in the fill valve is a cheap little rubber disc that wears out, fails to seal to the seat, and creates the "singing toilet" problem. It happened again yesterday so I went to the local old-school, been-there-since-the-1930s hardware store where I got one last time. They had the hook for them, alright, but none on the hook, and the owner said that yes, he needed to order some, one of these days. I then went to the national chain hardware store down the road and they laughed and said that the obvious solution was to take out the otherwise perfectly good brass fill valve and put in a new flimsy plastic Chinese one. Went on-line to Amazon and of course they had the OEM part at the nearby warehouse and delivered one to my front door for free the next day. What's going to happen next time I need some obscure bit of hardware, I'll look at Amazon first and not even bother getting in the truck and checking with the local guys. Which I hate to do, 'cause I like the local guys.

Amazon is my go to for a good deal of hardware. The only thing I don't like is a great deal of it Chinesium as is a lot of stuff anywhere.
You gotta be careful about that part.

We?ve ordered a fair bit off Amazon and have never been disappointed. We like to pick items that have lots of good reviews and they?re usually good. We bought some 12v led light bars for not much over 1/4 what similar ones locally would have been. I don?t mind paying a little more for good quality items locally but once it?s beyond the double point they?ve lost me.

I have bought quite a few items from Amazon over the last few years. Went to order a part for lawn mower the other day, password would not work. They sent me three different temp numbers to log in, none worked. I am not one to call them as that could take an hour to get a hold of someone. Ordered parts off E-bay. Of course I tried local first with no dice.

need mower belt went to local dealer on a Sat. morning did not have have Wednesday after 4 came home ordered from Amazon was in the mail box 10am Monday morning . don't know how they do it but it was over a weekend

This Spring I needed to get a new air filter for our Husqvarna mower. Ace Hardware wanted $20. Found a whole tune-up kit on Amazon for $4 less -- that's the air filter, oil filter, spark plug, fuel line, fuel filter and other parts.

I buy a lot of stuff on Amazon.

I know you're supposed to support your local businesses, but why waste a half day chasing all over the county and then not finding what you want, when with a couple strokes on the computer you can have it within a couple of days.

I like Amazon Also. They are super fast. They take things back, but try and not make a habit of or you will get on the bad guy list, this is what I hear. Stan

Those are great old toilets.
We have a pink one with matching sink in our half bath.
I disagree about the superiority of the old school fill valve though.
Put a plastic Fluidmaster in there and you will be happier. Every 10 years or so you'll need to replace the diaphram in it but those are $1.50 hardware store items and it takes less than a minute to install the new one.
Like the difference between 1950s drum brakes and modern disc brakes.
Modern brakes are superior in every possible way and are cheaper and easier to install than old ones.
Same with a Fluidmaster compared to the old ones.

Around here there are a lot of stores that have just quit stocking what I would consider common items. Maybe not something you would sell on a daily basis but definitely not items that would set on a shelf for months at a time. I have heard more than once " We can order it and have it here in a few days" .

Why would anyone do that when they can order it themselves, have it delivered to their door in two days and most likely get it cheaper?

I noticed my Google search engine posts Amazon first on most anything I look up............hmmmmmmmm! Usually pricy. But delivery is fast.

Just to be clear, replacing the disc involved removing one screw and using a socket wrench to remove the cap on the valve and the same size wrench to remove the valve seat and put in the new one that comes with the disc. A minute or two tops. I have a Fluidmaster in another bathroom and I don't think putting in a new diaphragm there is any faster than what I just did.
