Got a Deere 620

I bought a place in Colorado and it came with this '58 Deere 620. The sheet metal is in good shape. I brought it home to my place in Texas. Now what do I do with it?

Should I keep it original and just clean it up?

Or repaint it?

Not sure what I will end up doing with it, for now something to tinker with when I have time.

It starts and runs pretty good. Needs a new exhaust manifold gasket.

I also have the owners manual, and illustrated parts list

Appears to be in real good original condition. LEAVE IT AS IS ! It will make you a nice tractor. I'm sure it needs some tinkering and maintenance as they all do.

Nice looking 620 with a three point.Must have been a non smoker as no lighter.Ive had a 620 for thirty five years. They were a good tractor though mine doesn t get much use anymore.I see yours has an air stack mine doesn t.I believe I d leave it original.

NICE! I would not paint that tractor.

Looks like it has once had a Heat Houser. Interesting seat back cushion.

What is a good source for parts? my local Deere dealer or somebody on the net?

The water temp gauge doesn't work and I need the exhaust manifold gasket.

Another question, on the lower front of the dash is a hole and the letters "F", "G" and "O".

My grandpa and father ran IH from '42 to '87. About the time I got involved we were wanting our first cab tractor. The Deere Soundgard on the 2555 was way quieter than the cab on the CaseIH 685 so we converted to Deere at that time.

My dad's gone now and I have gotten out of the cattle and hay business but theirs still lots of work to do around here

Agree with Mike. Hard to find nice originals anymore. Get a new heat guage from Evergreen Restoration, 715 520-7876. I have used several and they are good.

[Fuel control lever was there if you had all fuel tractor.Heat Houser was something you needed in cold weather.

A canvas (or other cloth) cover over the sides of the engine to direct engine heat rearward to warm the operator in cold weather use.

F = tractor fuel; G = gasoline: O = off

Used on All Fuel tractors. It is a valve in the input to the carburetor.

In terms of parts, either - or of your suggestions. Depends on how much you are willing to pay and part availability. Some say Deere is always higher parts prices, but that is not always true in my experience.

Thanks very much!

Look at it this way JDF ..... how would your family like it if you got some botox injectons (whatever they do for a guy) and
had a lot of plastic surgery and some skin tightening, maybe get rid of those bags under your eyes and so on and so forth?
Maybe get real skinny and wear those new-style skinny pants and pointed shoes that all the young fellas wear. They'd scream
"EEEEK" and run away from the stranger in the room. Moral of the story, leave good things alone like so many others have
said.

That is a hard to find original in really nice shape. Someone has taken great care of it
thru the years. I would clean it, keep it inside, & leave it just the way it is. 60+ yr. old
tractors like that are rare!

She wears her battle scars with pride! The only thing I would do is find a pair of
original fenders for a safer ride. Nice score!

I was told by an old time JD mechanic that originally the yellow on the sides of the hoods was a large decal. When they get old they turned to what you have on this 620.

So that explains why it faded more than the rims.

Anyway to restore it? or at least get a little yellow color back in it?

Do people just paint the yellow now?

Thanks

I would leave it in its original clothes
and just do the regular maintenance to
it. I agree with everyone else on here,
it is nice as it sits.

I am in north Texas, about 60 miles north of Dallas and about 10 miles from the Texas/Oklahoma border.

The tractor came with the place that I bought in Westcliffe Colorado. The previous owner mainly used it to pull his RV in and out of the barn but also had a grader blade, brush hog and front end loader

Here is the front end loader that came with it. The loader says "american implement company" I think. I left the loader in Colorado.

The '79 square body in the background also came with the place

Leave it or you could probably with a bit of rubbing compound make it look like new with a small amount if work. It would brighten the color.

I have one, it is # 6221964 when I brought it home if it were as nice as yours I would
have left it original but the paint was gone for the most part. Sheet metal was super
nice. So I bead & sand blasted it 20 years ago & it still looks very nice. Your tractor
is Super nice. Spent hours on the metal & spent $$$ on special paint products. I live in
Pa, & our climate it far different than yours. I don't use mine daily but it does get 15
to 1800 hours per year.

Yours is a very nice original. Don't paint the yellow or anything else. You will lower its value. They came from the factory with decals for the yellow on the hood. They faded so fast that some were repainted by the dealer before they were sold. It is very desirable to find one that has not been painted and looks as good as yours. Also don't let it set outside. The sun will really damage the yellow decal.

leave it original. You can see plenty of pretty painted ones, but not original paint as that one.

Thanks. I got lucky. The previous owner built the barn in 2001 and I guess bought the tractor then. So it's been inside for at least the last 18 years.
The barn was full of equipment that I had to take for the sale to go through. He had the tractor listed at $8995 and the truck listed for 6895. Both were way to high. I got them to come down $25000 on the place but still hard to figure what the tractor or truck cost me.

I have a yard full of original equipment I agree they do look good but they look good painted to . The reason most things don?t get painted around here Is because it is just an extreme amount of work to even get half right . I know guys that?s can throw a 15 minute rattle can Job on something and have it look oh k but I?m just not that handy . That and if all it is your doing is a DuPont overhaul I agree leave it alone
