I have a older lawn mower with Tecumseh v-twin engine, runs good, starts good, but when it first starts it blow smoke like it's worn out! It's got a oil filter, i always kept it changed and it run good , How is that oil getting threw the valve guides ???

FastFarmall,
If your engine is blowing white smoke when you first start it up, you may have a leaky carb, too much gas.

My Farmall C will sometimes puff white smoke for a few seconds. Doesn't burn oil.

Tecumseh carbs are problematic. I have a 10 hp and use a 12v solenoid to shut off gas when not in use.

If your engine is burning oil, you have worn out engine. Not worth fixing.

You spelled it wrong. Should be: JUNK

The Model number is 4656x16A, The serial number i will have to go out and get it,It's a 20 hp, V-Twin.It shoot's blue smoke when it first starts. I bought it new, in 2002.It doesn't use oil, or very little.

The reason I ask for the model and serial number. Is the fact that it tells the ones that work on them. What they are working on. So they have a better chance of helping you.

I work on generators. Many differant kinds. So knowing what model and serial number. Helps me to know what information I need to give to the coustomer.

Not picking on you and you are not the first one. To make that mistake. But providing all the information you can does help.

Valve quides may be worn to the point you are getting oil past them. Your saying it doesn't burn oil, but smokes after starting until warmed up would be a clue. Even if the motor does not have replaceible quides a machinist can install them. The cost used to be fairly reasonable. But it's been 10 years since I've done quide replacement in an engine. Any good small engine mechanic can tell if the quides are worn past tolerance. Your choice whether or not the motor is worth the expense.

It is Engine Model TVT691 600401A {H} Family XTPSXS 6912AA Displacement 691 DOM 0316H that's all i got ! So when was it made?

It really depends on which Tecumseh engine you have.

I have seen two 16 hp Tecumseh engines on the same year and model mower. One had a plastic carburetor with too many o-rings. The other mower had a metal carburetor. I was unfortunate to have the plastic carb. It sucked. Every year I had to replace the o-rings. they would swell and block fuel delivery.

This engine has an intake valve seal which could be worn after 17 years. Tecumseh diagram number 151A part number (35862) This is most likely the problem if it is not rings. I don't see an exhaust valve seal.

I doubt it is the rings,it's just too solid for that, but when i got that info of the family, Dom ect, it said 30 weight only. i have used 10w-30 !

I noted that a number of manufactuers have recently switched to recommending 10w30 oil. My 13 horsepower HF generator and my push mower makers have said the same. Since your engine has run for years on 10w30 I doubt that it would suddenly start blowing smoke at start up because of worn valve stem guides. Check that intake valve stem seals. The intake cycle forms a vacuum and if the seal is worn or bad it will suck oil into the cylinders through the valve stem guide. I use a synthetic oil.

Pull both spark plugs and see if one has more carbon or oil on it. That might indicate if one of the seals is bad. It could be both because of its age. Remember, air cooled engines run hotter than water cooled engines and even synthetic rubbers have their limit.

One other thought. The fuel pump is operated by crankcase vacuum. Sometimes a diaphragm leak can cause oil to enter the fuel line.
