what did you drive to school the last year you went? in 1973 had a 1966 Pontiac GTO 389, 4 speed got it in 1970 put it in the barn and a year later it came out with a fresh engine would run 12.20 at the strip, I drove it on the street. what did you drive?

67 Pontiac firebird with an overhead cam 6 and a 2 speed automatic. Looked awesome and I don't know how fast it would go as I chickened out at 110 or so, but it was terrible on takeoff. Wouldn't hardly spin the rear tires on gravel. But would easy so 70 in first gear. Loved that car.

1968 Mustang coupe, 302 (73), automatic, 16.9 quarter miles at the strip. 16 mpg in town, 20 on the highway.

1956 Ford Crown Victoria--292 with Ford o matic---Tee

1973 Plymouth Gold Duster, 225 slant six, 3 on the floor, Grey with black interior, RCA 8 track, Radio Shack SSB CB

Graduated H.S. in '75, '73 Ford E100 window van that we used to haul dirt track bikes to the races with. I used to run 1/4 & 1/2 mile flat track until I turned 20 and got burned out. Fun while it lasted. I rode a Champion framed Honda 250 Elsinore and a Champion framed Honda XL350.

From 1975, high school grad in ?77 through college in ?81, I drove a 1975 Ford 4 x 4 four speed with a 351 Windsor. Engine was junk, the 351 Detroit was better.....but with spur grips all the way around that truck would go through anything.

92-93 school year 1984 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 350 4 barrel. Some days I would take dads 66 nova but I got 2 tickets that fall so no more driving it. With a out a month left I bought a new 4x4 long bed S10 to drive to collage

1971 for Gran Torino 351 Cleveland very fast no power steering no air burned of a set of g 60 tires in 1 night. also 7 transmissions C-4 in 20000 miles all under warranty but 2 . I wish I had it back. I graduated in 1976

67 GTO Early 67 that still had 389 tri power. His and Hers Hurst shifter. I blame that car for a lot of trouble I got into as a teenager, but wish I still had it today!

A 63 Biscayne, 230, 4 barrel, milled head, ported, polished, roller rockers, solid lift cam, dual point distributor, headers, duals, p track, 4 speed... And an 8 track!

What I had in that, I could have built a fire breathing big block!

But it was different, fun!

In '72 a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback with an Earl Sheib $100 paint job, and wheels from a Plymouth GTX. Anyone remember Earl?

'52 Norton ES-2 motorcycle. Lots of cold rides in the winter. One of those bikes you wrench on all week to ride on Sunday.

I also had a 63 Biscayne 230, 2speed powerglide 4 door..rusty and kinda beat up, but it ran forever, til the frame cracked enough that only one door would open. Almost made 175000 miles, sold the engine trans and scrapped the rest.

Ben

My '67 GTO- 400 I put a tri-power on- Hurst Dual gate- 4.11 gears- No other options! Got married and traded for a '73 Blazer.

Graduated 1966, drove 1957 2dr hardtop 283 punched to 301 11:1 compression, 3/4 cam 2 4bbls, 3speed on colume with overdrive, would twist speedometer cable off in second gear. Hard on gas, but fun to drive!

I mostly rode the bus too. Dad didn't believe in spending money on gas and tires when the bus would stop at the driveway and we could ride for free. I had a late 63 Ford Galaxy 500 2 door hardtop with a 289 and 3 on the tree but only drove when there was a good reason.

I graduated in 1976 driving a 1974 Ford F100.

FUNNY you asked this now, just yesterday an old friend and I were talking about how many grrrls could fit in the cab of a standard cab pickup, plus me and my buddy.

Were the cabs bigger then, or were the grrrls smaller?

LOL! GOOD times!

Senior year 2012-2013. 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD. 6.0 gas. Worked hard to pay for that truck. Bought when I was 15, before I had my license. Traded it off about a year or two after high school for a newer one, Minnesota rust was starting to get to it.

1967 VW microbus with a 1.9l Opal between the front seats and 13 speeds forward and 7 in reverse. Nissan 280Z independent rear end. Jim

1966 I drove a 58 Ford 4 dr sedan with 292 and three on the tree. Had a 57 Chevy 4 dr sedan three on the floor and six cylinder engine before that. My brother and I laid out in the cold to chisel a hole in the floor for the JC Whitney three speed shifter.

I drove a 1975 Plymouth Duster with a slant 6 and an automatic. I wanted to switch the motor but i wanted to blow the slant six up first. I never did get it blown up I finally changed it to a 340. That still didn't do what I wanted so I dropped a 440 in it. They said it wouldn't fit without major modifications. It fit nicely with the stock exhaust manifolds. It was fun but still not quite how I wanted it to go so I bought a 1970 challenger. I put a 440 Sixpack in it with a pistol grip shifted 4 speed, Dana 60 rearend with 4.10 gears, shaker hood, stage 4 heads. It would break the drivers side motor mount so I had to put a torque strap on it to hold the motor down.

1939 Ford Deluxe 2 door sedan, black. Flathead V-8 with 3 on the floor. Got real good at replacing that transmission...

1967 Chevy.drove to high school grad in 74. Not to good in winter snow and ice. Wonder it survived. Always liked it. Still in my garage today, enjoy taking a spin in nice weather.

Graduated in 1968, first graduating class in a new consolidated high school - go Falcons! Rode the bus much of the time- about an hour each morning and evening. The road by our house which was the closest route to school was being graded/graveled for paving in the spring. So when I needed to drive, one of my options was a 1929 Ford A Model that the uncle who raised mother had bought new - it had the clearance for the muddy, rutted at times road! Three on the stick, two door, no radio, no heater, narrow tires, maybe 55 mph downhill with a tailwind! Otherwise I had the option of a '61 Ford Custom 4-dr sedan, 6 cyl, 3 on the tree or later in the year, '66 Ford F-150 w/ 3 on tree, v-8. Oh, I also had substitute bus driver's license but only had to drive homeward once or twice - don't remember what happened for the usual driver not to be there. From the high school, we traveled a paved route that didn't go by home, back to the elementary school, where we unloaded and reloaded for the feeder routes from there.

Got to drive Dad's 56 F100 short bed 272 V8. But rode bus to school. Only 2 kids in whole school had their own cars. Dad needed truck during the day anyway. But let me have it at night and furnished the gas! But bought a 57 Ford 2 dr. Hard top. 312 auto. Gun metal gray. After graduation with my own money.

The retired family grocery getter. 80s Pontiac station wagon with a 307 olds. Gutless turd but fun for me as I could haul 8 of my friends (all chicks of course :)
I put dual side pipes on it I made and air shocks to jack the back end up. Popped the hub caps off and painted the rims black with chrome beauty rings. Loud as heck. Terrible mileage. Super fun for a kid to drive to school in though. Man would that boat really get goin doin donuts in the snow. Lost driving privileges a few times for that in the school parking lot. Good times.

01 Dodge Ram 1500 318 5spd. Class of 2010 been my on/off daily ever since. Waiting for the 318 to give up to drop in a 4bt.

pair of Converse All Stars. didn't get a car till the second semester of my Freshman year in college. '55 Ford for $150

Hard to answer that since I've gone to school off and on most of my life but if considering HS, I drove a black 57 Chevrolet 210, 2 Dr. HT with 283 2V and PG when a senior.

Graduated in 07. Had a dark green 94 Toyota pickup on 35?s after football season I went to school in the morning left at lunch to go work for a union contractor on a street rehab job and bought a 2500hd duramax. I was the only one in my class with a union card and a brand new truck. Surprising the Toyota is the one vehicle I wished I still had. It was the most indestructible vehicle I?ve ever owned

Traditional, student school bus driver, bet that was fun never had that at my school we had chevy and international busses with 5+2 sit in the back of the bus and all you could here is the 2 speed grinding

1960 Pontiac Catalina 4 door, 389 with 2bbl and low compression pistons. Hand me down family car.that thing was built like a tank.

The car was still in good shape.

I couldn't keep head gaskets in the engine, pulled it out and was going to put something stock back in.

I just never got around to it, got tired of seeing it sit in the weeds and sold it.

Wish now I had kept it.

1950 Merc 2dr V8 3spd w/od and a $19 floor shift from J C Whitney in 1960. I remember changing trans on my '48 Ford.Lifted back bumper on to a hayrack with the manure loader so I could roll back the rear end (either that or pull engine)

Last year I was in High school I drove a 1974 dodge van. I special ordered it in Dec of 1973 and got it on my birthday in 1974. I was 18 one the day I got it

used to hitch- hike around the country a lot & was always glad to see one of these stop for me. They had a huge gas tank, a lone driver & a long way to go. Always a salesman needing company to stay awake & pass the time. '60's; those were the days.

1960 Chevy C50 cattle truck 6 cyl 5 speed, when I had a need to not ride the bus, usually FFA stuff. every time it showed up in the school parking lot, one friend would say "I see you drove the Corvair today". it took up a lot of space. 1967.

Well, I was happy to have 'wheels', 1949 Chevy!! (in 1959) bought for $30. had to put a used engine in,then also had a 1951 Chevy coupe. The older one was the 'beater', '51 was the date car.

Graduated in 1981.
Drove a Jeep J4000 pickup. Went to school half the day then went home to farm the othet half.

When I graduated from University (1984) I had a crappy looking Renault 12, which I had bought for 200 dollars. One week later, I started my first job at the Philips Research Laboratories; I was frowned upon by the guard on duty when I reported at the main entrance for access, he could not believe I was an employee. LOL

1961 a 1950 6 cylinder flat head Plymouth. I parked on a little hill so I could push start it since it was so unreliable. TDF

1978, 1967 Chevy Biscayne 4dr, 250, 3 on the tree, no options, in the 4 years I drove it replaced interior twice including black cloth Caprice stuff the last time. 425,000 miles between the 3 odometers. Never had head off or pan down, 2:1 compression in #5, 5:1 in number 2 and the rest in between, qt oil every 100 miles. Was sold when I bought my first college car, kid tried to outrun cops thru a corn field and broke the frame, then the body seam in the rear seat unzipped.

College, was driving my 4th college car, 73 Olds 98 LS. 12.5mpg Replaced with 67 Pontiac Executive, replaced by 76 Lemans Sport Coup, replaced by 82 Chevette, which I kept driving even after I bought my first new car.

Started out with a 1948 Mustang motorcycle then got a 1952 Studebaker Landcruiser 4 door sedan with 232 V-8 and overdrive. Graduated in 1960.

I bought a '58 Ford Retractable Hardtop in '65 and drove to graduation in '66. It had a 352 interceptor, automatic, with 2.69 axle. It would run about the same speed in 2nd as in Hi. Still have it in a an old garage building but has not been run since early 70's. In '68 I bought a '64 Cyclone which I still drive at special times. Drove it to my 50th class reunion and to my retirement reunion last year. I'm thinking about selling some of my old stuff.

Bought a 55 Chev. about half way through my senior year in 1962. Had plastic on the seats yet. Don't remember the miles.

I had the dually to use, but my last year of high school, well at least the last half year I went to that prison I drove a bus. Walked out January my senior year, had my diploma in hand, working and earning my own money while my so called friends were still in school.

Never got to drive to school, too poor to own a car and didn't get my license until almost 18 years old. Went to work on bridge construction and bought a 1961 VW beetle after graduation.

59 chevy with a six cylinder and three on the tree. It had no options, no radio but it did have a heater. I dont know if a heater was an option or standard equipment in 1959.

1973 F100 6 cylinder 3 speed transmission, drove it starting in 1979 , graduated June 1980. Wow that will be 40 years ago this June.

I had a '36 Chev pickup- pretty decent rig, and I drove it to school sometimes, but the valves floated at 38 MPH, so it did have some limitations. I was going to buy a better car, but mom wanted me to save up for college, so she made me a deal- if I'd save my money, she'd buy a new red '65 VW (to replace the family '56 model), and I could use it. I took her to her car pool in the AM and picked her up in the afternoon, and other than that it was pretty much mine.

My first cousin bought his half brother's 69 Hemi Cuda/Torque flite with about 10,000 miles in 75 for $2,500.

Later he bought a triple black 70 Challenger convertible with 440 6 pack and 4 speed. He told me that the Challenger would dust the Cuda any day of the week.

Either was easily put on the trailer by his 32 Vicky, which was THE quickest car around in the late 50s/early 60s.

Junior year 1997-98 88 1/2 Ford Escort. 250K miles on original clutch, sold at auction. Grandfather bought it for granddaughter. 1998-99 1984 Ford Ranger 2.8 V-6 auto. Fair weather truck, run all day when nice weather. Crappy SE MI weather, not so much. Was one of Fords computer controlled carb vehicles, not quite carburetor not fuel injection. Cant remember mileage but it was past its prime. Would spin tires decent enough (after a car wash). Should have fixed up the 88 Ranger that was fuel injection. 2.9 V-6 manual 225K miles.

I had no help getting my first car, older brother bought a 50 chevy and I bought his 48 chevy fleetline off him I was 15, Dad would not let me drive it till I had license and Ins. Worked on farm for neighbor, split manifold on the 48, found some fender skirts, buddy painted lighting flash on skirts with my name on them.
When I got to drive it the Babbitt bearings were getting bad, I would go to junk yard & buy rods for $3 and change them, you could get oil pan off with engine still in car, crankshaft was bad, needed another car & Dad saw a 50 Plymouth up the road so I bought it. was all rusted out but ran good and I got to work, then found a 51 dodge with no engine, had good body traded the Junk yard the 48 chevy and Plymouth without engine for the dodge. then brother in law had a 53 Merc. He wanted the dodge so we traded. So I was on my 4th car when I Graduated. Sold it when I went to Air Force.

1964 Chevrolet 1/2 ton custom cub, 283 three speed on the column. When I was a senior traded up up to 66 Pontiac Tempest Sprint 6. Overhead cam 230 CIS six with a 4 barrel Quadrajet. Ran pretty good, but kept dropping pistons. Replaced Six cylinder with 400 out of a 68 Catalina. I had the AFB Carter and a four speed, GTO in disguise.

(quoted from post at 12:19:09 01/29/20) My first cousin bought his half brother's 69 Hemi Cuda/Torque flite with about 10,000 miles in 75 for $2,500.

Yeah, a 440 would usually outrun a 426 Hemi... unless the guy with the Hemi knew what he was doing and was constantly tuning and tweaking on it, then all bets are off. A 440 really had to be out of whack to run poorly.

As for a '32 Ford running away from them, well that was a pretty light car, the Mopars were a fairly heavy car compared to say a Mustang or Camaro.

Put the Mopar power in a car similar to the '32 Ford and once again all bets are off.

As a senior, I was still driving the car I bought when I turned 15. 1958, 2dr HT Chevrolet Belair. The car had been ordered with a 280hp, 348 with a PG. Guy that owned it before me added Hedman headers, replaced the hyd. cam with a 315 hp/solid lifters, replaced the PG with a 3sp and Hurst shifter, replaced the vacuum 3-2 carb linkage with mechanical. It needed posi and a 4sp, to be faster off the line. But once you over came tire spin, it could surprise all but the high end muscle cars!

I too drove a school bus in high school, but as a junior, not a senior. I had a freshly over hauled 261 with a 4sp tran/2sp axle, in a 63 Chev. We moved to another school district that didn't use student drivers, my senior year.

Class 72,1954 Chev Belair 53k on speedo. punched it out to 60 over,Iske cam,tri power, split exhaust 3speed on the floor, painted it Rally Green and still have it sitting in the garage. But my brother drove it for his high car and blew the engine in 76, hoping this year to have it on the road again.
