I was the substitute ag teacher last week and for the Freshman I was instructed to show this video on raising cattle on open range. The video showed a 150 thousand acres ranch in Montana. How common is this. He was checking the cattle with a helicopter!

The King ranch in deep south Texas is 825000 acres. There are quite a few ranches in south and west Texas and the Panhandle that are over 100000 acres . A lot of the big places use helicopters regularly. We use them even on smaller places in south Texas to gather cattle. Especially out of the brush. Tony

Parker Ranch in Hawaii has, if I remember right from a tour there about 10 years ago, has about 35,000 head of brood stock & sends feeders to Texas for finishing. The ranch is held in trust to benefit a hospital in Honolulu that specializes in treatment of tropical diseases in children. I don't remember how many acres, but it's big. We don't think of Hawaii as a major producer of beef, but it is. jal-SD

It's pretty common in a lot of western states. In some of those places they may need a couple hundred acres per cow/calf pair. A ranch I visited/hunted on in WY was 105,000 acres. Their "driveway" was 12 miles long.

As one old cowboy said, "Cattle have to graze at 40 miles an hour to keep from starving to death."

I remember reading about the "huge ranch" one ol' boy had near the Mojave desert- can't remember how many thousands of acres, but it was only 100 animal units.

A Texas ranch owner was trying yo help a mid central state land owner to start up a cattle ranch. They drove up to the place. Walked up to the top of the hill. What do you think of my ranch? That rock post is one corner of my ranch. T oak tree is the other, and the rock pile is the 3 rd, and we are standing on the 4 th. The texas ranch owner looked at him and he said ?In texas it stated me 3 days to drive across my ranch?. The new ranch owner said ? yes I use to have a pu like that too?

It was strange for me seeing the south and south west! I grew up with hills and trees everywhere, and was under the impression the plains were flat! Well Nebraska and Kansas isn't flat I found out and most states away from the cities you can go for miles before the next civilization with ranches or reservations in between!
