new vehicle data

I was listening to a AM radio station today. Had the radio mechanic show where people call in about there mechanical problems. Today they had a special segment about your vehicle, your data, your choice. So it was about your vehicles data. In the computers where it has the fault codes stored, it talked about your independent repair shop can pull the codes and the shade tree mechanic can get a code reader. They said that in the newest cars and trucks the data is not stored, it is sent to the company. You have to take it to a dealer to be fixed. There is noway that independent shops can get the codes to diagnose the problem. It will take a $100 million out of the independent shops pockets and now it is take it to the dealer only fix. Has anyone head about this???? Or is it BS.

Sam is the real deal,he doesn't spread false information, i have listen to him for quite a while,he's on Yankton,S.Dak. Radio Station.570Am,8 AM Saturdays. I heard him say that today too!

They have been doing it for a while in big trucks. Brother in law was having trouble with 2019 volvo truck called the breakdown line for volvo the person on the other end pulled up his truck told him what code it was throwing that kept shutting it down. Then did something and told him it would now drive to the shop.

My Snap On Modus Edge is updated to 19.4. Haven't had any issues yet, used it on an 18 Thursday. What some manufacturers have done is implement a way to make sure you are legit. FCA Chrysler was first. It was part of my update cost to be able to sign up with FCA to prove I am not a hacker. Radio show doesn't have all the facts and is trying to spread misinformation.

I don't know if this is real or not.

I have heard that there is "right to repair" legislation being considered by congress to address this situation. Meanwhile they are still sorting out who owns what. Seems that some manufacturers want to retain possession of parts of your vehicle - like the software in the PCM. Time will tell.

Our last Subaru was like that for the EyeSight, but that's the only problem we had with it, so we traded it for a new Subaru with even more bells and whistles!

(quoted from post at 15:39:30 03/01/20) Lets assume this is true.

Do dealers really think they can keep up with all the repairs needed on every vehicle they sell if every independent shop is run out of business???

If they are the only ones who can fix the problem, they can work at whatever speed they choose. Customer is stuck.

I think it's funny how so much of time Deere is brought up in these discussions. Deere has one of the most open diagnostic systems of any ag manufacturer. You just need to know how to read it. Need a diagnostic manual for that.

They do offer remote diagnostics on some models. Solves the problem of customers calling complaining that they have code xxx.yy when it is really xxx.zz.yyy and has a totally different meaning.

He's somewhat right the average joe will be locked out unless he pays an extortion fee and has the equipment the manufacture has authorized.

I may be wrong about a Chrysler even with your snapper you may have to fess up some cash to get deep into a 2018 up mopar. I am not letting it bother me I don't plan to play this game much longer...

One link to get good info... Notice a few are just $10 : ) for access to factory info... Its a free down load to your laptop for Toyota and all I spec the same info the dealer mechanic uses you pay a small fee to use it : ) tack it to the bill and the way I am headed on my way out the door as I age out...

I don't like to get into this there are to many that are not in the know they do not realize what we pay for good tools and information they think we are SPOSE to give it away... They do not realize we can look at the data pids and make a good judgment call on the direction we need to go and SHOCKED we don't use a code to throw the parts cannon at it...

It may be for the good some of it is getting locked out... Youtube can not fix every issue...

> They said that in the newest cars and trucks the data is not stored, it is sent to the company.

I do not believe that is true. That needs better documentation than some guy blabbing on the radio.

What is true, and has been for some time, is that third-party repair shops often don't have access to the information necessary to diagnose and fix specific error codes.

It is also true that vehicles with "connected services" such as OnStar often can send error data back to the OEM. I have had this happen with my 2017 Chevy 2500HD, even though my OnStar and WiFi subscriptions have lapsed. If my truck sets an error code, it gets sent to GM and I receive a notification by email. I can still read and clear stored error codes with my scan tool.

Wsell don't know about that but i do know that some of the rep[lacement parts have to be down loaded into the cars/ truck computer as they are NOT A PLUG AND PLAY . and sometimes NOW this is a good thing . Case in point here , We needed a car now and at the time we did no0t want to dive into a new one and i found the as i call it the REVENGER . It had a couple problems that i thought i could handle .It had a problem with the anti loc brakes and traction control . It was SUPPOSE to be just the module not a super big deal just remove six brake lines upnplug and un bolt replace , NOT . The unit my cost was just a 178 and change . Yea i could R &* R it but it would not work till it was flashed into the computer and had to be plugged into the scan star system and factory coding had to be flashed . Neat , at times it is nice to have good friends in low places that can pull strings . For what the module would cost my friends at the dealer would do it . Simple job of R & R and flash , total time 2 hours and 45 min. WELLLLLLLLLLLlllllll that did not go as planed . As the NEW module out of the box was defective and in turn FRIED another part of the system and it was going to take three days to get another one from National . So in the mean time they gave me a new Cherokee to drive . Three days later they call me and let me know that they were still having problems with defective parts and just keep on driving the Cherokee . week one has come and gone and into week two and the REVENGER is growing a beard stetting in the same stall. After three and a half weeks they finally get everything talking to each other and all is well . Then the throttle body takes a dump and it has to be flash coded , then the Cat plugs up and it has to be flash coded . Just because you break down and buy the best Scan tools out there off the candy wagons guess what they may tell you what MIGHT be wrong but they are not going to flash code with the factory . This is what the companys want . I said i would never buy a scan tool , well i lied i bought a high dollar Snap on Solus and you have to spend big bucks to upgrade with each new model year . Just how much of this new tech do we really need to haul our donkeys from point A to B . I may be and old fart a non conformist what have you but all i need is something that will stop and go and not break down . I don't need heated and cooled seats , i don't need the car/truck to tell me or fight me to stay in my lane , i don't need it BEEPING at me everytime someone comes up from behind or along side . i do not need anti lock braking , and i really don't even like a automatic trans . I don't even mind changing points every 10 or 12000 miles . ya all can keep this new stuff . Myself i have not liked any cars built since 71 and the last half decent truck i have owned was a 79 F 250 Ford and it had it's problems . My 73 f 250 was a good truck other then the ft. end as the Dana 44 was way to light and ate spider gears like M & M's but it was cheap to fix and in three and a half hours you could be back on the road.

Regardless of who repairs it, the electronics are insanely expensive to fix. That is exactly why I will never again own any vehicle that is not still under manufacturer warranty. Extend the warranty to at least 100,000 and trade them when they still have some warranty left and they still have good value. The bonus is you always have a pretty reliable ride.

That money is already gone. Long ago.
Scan tools will read a basic amount of info. 32 variables?
Other codes may show up on a scan tool with "Definition Not Available" meaning it is a dealership proprietary code and you get to go the the dealer to get it fixed.
The basic 32 lines were set up by the feds and the automakers and will effectively keep your car running. Might not run too good, but it should stay running. The proprietary codes help to fine tune it.
Henry Ford, You familiar with him?
Back in the day, Henry told Congress he would sell his cars at $2 over cost if the owners had to buy all the replacement parts from him.
Well, Dealership proprietary codes have now done just that.
BMW and VW were the worst. Others have followed suit.
If you pop the hood and cant see the engine, figure you will be spending money at the dealership.
Good luck with that one.

Worst thing they ever did was to put electronics on cars. It's all fine and good if you can trade every couple years but the person that has to live with the car when it starts getting old has hell on earth. Even the dealers can't fix them. For one thing when a car malfunctions it's automatically assumed it's in the electronics. I inherited my mothers car and she had it to mechanic after mechanic including the dealer where they bought the car and they replaced all of the electronics piece by piece. It would run for a while and suddenly quit leaving a 94 year old woman stranded. Then when I got the car I did the same thing chasing electronic parts and it kept getting worse until it couldn't be made to start. All along the problem wasn't the electronics at all, the timing chain was going bad. Some idiot came up with the idea of coating the teeth of the sprockets with plastic to make it run quieter and little by little the plastic was flaking off. Had it not been for the electronics a mechanic probably could have determined the problem was with the timing chain and she could have had that replaced or got her another car.

Chrysler data is stored in a cloud with the right set up you can communicate with your cell phone in fact my Chrysler mechanic bud links up just that way... Basically you are never connected directly to the car other than a dongle the info goes to a cloud then transmitted back to your remote device "Beam me up Scotty"

Its a gateway of some sort...

Your problem being that most 'mechanics' don't 'listen' to the engine but try throwing parts at it instead.
I have my cell phone and a AAA tow card. Stranded? You left grandma on the road with no phone? Not even a "Jitterbug"?
I have also enjoyed fixing vehicles that dealerships could not. Then again, I also know how to adjust carburetors and work on fuel injection.
Too bad no one could use a timing light while cranking the engine or even better to check the timing with he engine running.
Bouncing light at idle is sloppy gears. Bouncing light at speed is bad dist bushings.
Don't ask me, I know nothing.

Electronics on cars is the consumers fault. Your a consumer, right?
Didn't you get tired of yearly tune ups? 12 to 15K and your back in the shop.
Want better mileage?
Better air quality? lower emissions? Ever been to LA back in the day?
You did it to yourself.
You want it, you got it.
Truth hurts.
We won't even get into "Dealership Proprietary codes"
Nor will we mention "Planned Obsolescence"
Can you say 10 years?
That old Subaru/Toyota whatever is headed for the bone yard real soon.
Corvette, Cadillac, the list is growing.

I was talking to my son i law today. He is a service writer/manager at the local Ford/ Lincoln dealer. He said as of the 2020 model year that a scan tool can still be used to access the pcm and all the modules.

I use to never update my snap-on scanners I would keep them 3 years and at the least get what i would have spent on up dates for it on trade in.

I fell off the wagon and have kept my Verus Pro updated since day one... The bad after I had owned it 3 years when I went to trade it in it I lost the updated money : ( I would have got the same for it if I had not updated it I thru the update money out the window...

I like it but its a money pit... Good scanners can be brought for a lot less... If anyone has one you can clone the hard drive and upgrade it so its lighting fast...
