My bother in law is looking at this MF Discbine, MF 1359 with steel on steel rolls. Does anyone have any experience with this machine? Please correct me if I am wrong but I believe I have seen this design with Hesston and New Idea and maybe even Agco labels on them. It is a nine footer.

What are the pro's and con's, any severe short comings?

Thanks. Paul

I have a NI 5209 and I think it is a great machine. Mine are rubber rolls. Overall, the pros and cons are as follows: it is a lighter machine than NH. But I run a JD 4020 which is now over 50 years old. I want a lighter machine to avoid hurting the tractor. I wanted 9? wide since my rakes and tenders are that size too. My fields are smooth and clean. I sharpen the blades constantly. The cutter bar drive shaft is known to be light and twist under impact loads, but I think I have avoided that problem. I did drive thru a big ground hog mound last year and felt everything lug down. That type thing could twist the cutter bar shaft. There may be improvements on the later machines than mine but I am not sure. Overall, performance and simplicity of the components is good. Thick wet hay is no challenge at all.

As with any used disc mower, check for any bad bearings in the header gearbox. Grasp each disc by the point where the knives mount and see if any will move anymore up or down or left to right more than the others.

As far as I know the longest surviving largely unchanged design/model of discbine which says something. Newer models like this have sectional hex shaft and wider flats on the pod gears.

Several in our area are maybe 25-30 years into cutting 300-400 acres a year. Many of the oldest ones moved into backup role now but the gear module design is fault tolerant and has prevented the spectacular life ending bar meltdown that kills the spur gear bar designs when they are old.

IMHO - they are an excellent mower conditioner. Only downside IMHO is no shear protection. All gear drive, no belts, proven design.

Good luck,
Bill
