8mm film of my grandfathers MF135/Muck Farm

I found an old 8mm film of my great-grandfathers muck farm. They are harvesting lettuce with a then new 1967 MF135 and an unknown year MF35. I still own the 135 and use it regularly. The government has placed a conservation easement on the property so it is no longer able to be farmed. Here is the link to it if you want to watch.

I haven't lived there for many, many years, but I grew up in Northeastern Ohio. We had a bunch of muck farms in the area, but only in a narrow band that wound its way down through the area. The muck farms provided lots of jobs for the young men, planting lettuce, asparagus, cabbages, and other vegetables. Then we got to harvest the produce as it became mature.

All around the muck farms were traditional dairy farms, but the muck farms were an important part of the local agriculture.

Muckland is nothing more than a swamp that has been drained. What is left is a very rich organic soil that is a perfect for crops like lettuce and onions. Central NY had quite a few muck farms years ago.

At about :26 that 135 pulling the empty wagon looked like it was in "road gear"(3 High);-)
Thanks for posting!

In West Michigan we grow onions, carrots etc and a lot of celery in muck fields. These are grown in narrow rows which is why we have so many Farmall BN's in our area. I was full grown before I ever saw a B. Having been to many tractor shows around the country I now know that different areas have very different equipment needs.

Henry,

I grew up a bit Northeast of Akron near Mantua. The muck started north for Route 82 and went down to the Ravenna area. Just a couple of days ago I spoke to one of my childhood friends who owns what used to be his father's muck farm. He told me that Brugmann's gravel business is buying/contracting for deep beds of gravel that apparently exist below the muck. My friend is not interested in letting his place get dug up, but apparently some the locals are selling out or contracting for the removal of the gravel strata.

Good memories from a LONG time ago.
