Starter question

I'm rebuilding the starter for my WD45 Allis. I have some problems with the coating on the magnets coils. Can I replace this cloth with electrical tape or is there another product I should use. Sorry for the improper terminology. Its been a while since I did this.

Dip them in varnish unless there are bare spots shorting to ground. That is a special wrapping to be found at a electrical repair shop. I can get it here.

That rap is made of cloth, not sure if you can it buy any where on the internet .

I rebuild starters and I get it from my supplier, if you would like it done correctly you can ship them to me . electrical tape would likely work but if the starter produced heat from being cranked on to long it could get sticky and gooey.

Thanks everybody you've given me good direction. I do appreciate the offer to repair it but I want to do it myself just because.

Here's the "good stuff" everyone is being so elusive about...

NOT cheap, but it's the right stuff for the job.

If I may make a suggestion, when you put it back together, the screw/bolts holding the poleshoes in position have to be TIGHT so the poleshoes don't contact the armature AND for the magnetic field to be as strong as possible for good starter operation.

That's darned hard to do without the proper tool to hold the drive bit tight in the screw.

Below is how it's done professionally.

Sorry to hijack this thread and I can send an email if you'd rather but I have a fairly simple question for elf6147 ... or anybody else.

Do you have any recommendations for painting the inside of the starter before the field windings go back in ? I'm trying to figure out if the filed pole shoes need to make contact with the bare metal inside the case ? Is it ok to paint the inside of an empty case ?
