Got my IH 550 chopper

I have posted on here about wanting an IH 550 or 555 chopper (forage harvester). A bought a 650 off an online auction last fall and the heads were very nice but the base machine was wore out. Cliff Nelson a poster here called and said his Dad had a good shed kept one. I was able to get it last week and the nice part is he lives less than an hour away. I ran it and oiled it up. I am planning on mounting a mower bar head on it to chop oats for my beef cows. I have a one row, two row wide, two row narrow, pickup and mower bar (direct cut) heads for it. I would sell the two row narrow if anyone is interested. I will post more pics latter in the summer when chopping oats. I would also like to find a nice IH 51 wagon to go with it.

Oats silage, that's heavy, you need my tandem axle Electric running gear, with 8 bolt wheels. The only thing it's got 15 in tires, but there about 14 inches wide!

Use to green chop some with a JI Case 300 cutter which was a IH 550 in Case paint. Only complaint was the lawnmower style cutterhead wouldn't throw green chop very far into the trailer.

Looks nice. I don't think that I have ever seen a 1 row head on a 550 before your post. Every 50, 55, 550, or 650 that I have seen has had a 2 row head. I believe that the 1 row for the 16 and 350 is the straight line configuration. Gotta be a nice 51 or 61 stashed away in a shed some place. Probably a dozen years ago I went to a consignment auction and there were 2 NH number 6 wagons and a NH 23 blower that look like they were just delivered new from the dealer. I just about cried over not being able to buy them and around the same time there was an Oliver 83 corn picker that looked factory fresh and sold for 600 dollars.

I know where there are two 51's and a 105 setting. All three were always shedded but the owner died and untill his wife dies nothing is going to happen. They had all IH equipment and took super care of it. Tractors were a 966 narrow front (I think it was fast hitch)706,several 350-450's and some H&M's.When she dies it is going to be a big family fight. Tom

4 years ago there was a 766 diesel WFE with fast hitch at auction that sold for 6,000 dollars. OK paint and tires but well cared for. The family was an IH dealer from the late 1960's until the early 1980's. I always wanted a 766 NFE from seeing the buyer's guides as a kid with a 234 corn picker on one.

If they don't throw it's because the knives have worn and there is too much space between the pan and knives. Should pick a nickel and leave a dime

I have the case 300 which is similar. Mine has several castings with the case eagle casted in them. I wonder if you could look at the clamp that holds the spout on to see if ih used the case casting there as mine has a clear case eagle casted in it. There is also one on the hubs and one other place I can't remember now.

I went and looked and no Eagles. Does your case use an apron chain for the top feedroll? The early 550's did. Mine is the later version with fedrolls. The sheet metal on the Case reminds me more of the 55 IH's. I have not researched the IH machines enough to get which models were made what years. I know they started with the 50,55,550 and finally the 555 which ended in the mid to late 70's. I wonder what the history of the Case is. They are for sure the same machine. Most of the castings would have been sand cast so adding the Eagle would have been easy. Did Case buy kit's from IH and then assemble them? I think there was also some crosover between Fox and Oliver on choppers. Tom

Jon, you are correct on the knife adjustment, also had to take all the knives off and rebevell every so often as the inbuilt knife sharpener would alter the cutting angle of the knives. Also the ledger bar had to be adjusted and turned to keep a square cutting edge.
