i have an old mercury vapor yard light in the yard about 70 feet from my grain bins. i would like to upgrade to the 20th century with an led yard light, and also would like to install2 flood or spot lights on the pole below the yard light to illuminate the grain bins when hauling in at night. any recommendations for yard lamps and then lights for the bins? good quality , no junk.real bright. thats about it. the floods will probably be about 30 ft off the ground, vapor lamp, 5 or 10 feet higher.

Check with your electric provider. I pay my local co-op fine dollars a month and they provide the light. If anything quits working it is their problem. Yes, it is a Led light.

thanks for the suggestion, but i would really rather do the install myself. i own the utility pole.

I too pay my co-op $6 a month for an led light. As mentioned before, they come out within 24 hours of being called if something goes wrong with the light. Just wondering why you'd want go through the trouble of climbing a pole to fix a light that may go out when a guy trained to do could ..... For free.

Look up LED corncob bulb. Bought one at Menards a couple years ago for $39 for a 10000 lumen bulb. Have to re-wire around the ballast as the bulb doesn't require it. This replaced a mercury vapor bulb...seems like twice the light.

i have a bucket truck so the install is no big deal. i need to add flood or spot lights to light the area at night when hauling in grain and filling the bins. here is a link to an led replacement for a yard light i found on line. im not familiar with all the led technology. at six dollars a month, id break even with this light in about 24 months vs 6 dollars a month forever.
poke here

I've got TWO lights in my back/side yard. They are before the meter, so I don't pay anything for them. Had the Electric company come out about 8 years ago and pull the bulbs. I WISH they'd come pull the poles....If there were a switch to turn the darn things OFF, I wouldn't mind having them...

If it's working I would leave it alone. I replaced one twice in the last couple months for a customer the photo eye would malfunction and it stayed on during the day after a weeks use. Then I put one up which was a different brand light at my house and within a month it quit altogether.

Do you know what wattage the mercury lamp is?

Most are around 175 watt, which make 7500 lumens.

With that information you can get an idea what wattage LED you need to replicate what you have, or adjust to improve.

You can also do research on a particular light fixture. There will be light spread charts, height recommendations, etc. Takes some time to compare the different choices, but you will know what to expect instead of guessing and being disappointed.

Going with the Lithonia, or any professional grade is definitely a step up from the HD or Lowes products. Buying online will save a ton over trying to get them from an electric contractor supply unless you have connections or an account.

jim, just placed the order, one yard light, and three of the flood lights. this should really make things easier. worst part is moving augers from bin to bin at night with a flashlight or drop cord in the dark.

Glenn I have the yard light in the link.
9800lm for $53.85
Been up for about a year and still works fine.
Has a 5 year warranty.
You can get 18000lm for $87.
It does not lite up a bigger area just makes the area brighter.

The lm is the brightness.
The K number is the color.
5000K is like daylight.

For the spot lights I bought regular old fashion lights like the put under the eve of a house.

One of them has a motion detector like in the picture and one is just regular.
I wired the non motion light in series with the motion detector so they both work off the same motion detector.
I just put LED flood light bulbs in them.
I like these lights better than the yard light above because the flood lights cover a bigger area.
Barn light

Well placed bright light is incredible. the LED lights will take way less power than conventional lights, so 14 gauge wire is even too much, but probably reasonable. UV rated wiring will make the install nice and as long lasting as the luminaries. Jim

You might want to look at putting an LED spot light kit on your auger tube. That helps a lot to get the light right where you need it.
