Going in tomorrow to have my eleven year old hip replacement redone. The other one needs it too but this one is a little worse. I have metal on metal joints, chrome ball and cobalt liner, and they are worn out. The blood ion level for cobalt is 12 and should be less that 1. The titanium parts in the pelvis and femur could also be loose. Three years of pain, getting progressively worse. Best case is just replace the ball and liner but it's probably more that that.

Oh man, I can't imagine going through that surgery a second time. Good luck with it and keep us posted. Just out of curiosity, was the first surgery done posterior or anterior? Posterior was a new procedure eleven years ago.

Both were posterior. Only a few surgeons were doing anterior then. Don't know what I'll have this time. First time was much easier than I though it would be. Three day stay and I was back to work in six weeks and stacking on the wagon in three months. I likened it to pads and rotors at 60,000 miles. I had a shoulder replacement in Jan, 2018 and a revision on it last June so this is routine for me. My only real concern is infection. I had a staph infection in this hip three years after the replacement that really knowked the S....T out of me. Never did get all my strength back.

Amazing what they can do! But never quite as good as original equipment!

Curious, how does an inanimate joint cause pain? Seems like you would just start walking crooked and wearing shoes uneven.

Seriously, praying all goes well!

Hi Steve.... Of course I'm not a doctor but this is what I was told when I got my left hip totally replaced in 07'. One new hip and two new elbows caused by bone marrow transplants in 05 and 06.... Then later in 14'..... And I'm due for my 4th BMT this year if I choose to go that route.

Doc said even though they used the best hardware at the time....... The new joints do have that possibility to wear out. I have the cobalt joints too. So what happens when they replace the hip , all the muscles and tendons that re attached themselves post joint replacement start to become loosened and irritated when the old and worn out parts lose thier integrity. As in worn out years later. That's where the pain gets introduced.

First of all, best of luck with the surgery and a speedy recovery. Second, sounds like you put some miles on those parts, didn't just park it in the driveway.
