Back with the F600 again.

Been looking around for a replacement engine for the '78 F600 dump. Got sent to a local guy that is sort of an older Ford specialist. Told him I had an F600 with the 370 gas and needed an engine. He swears he's put 351-M400's in them before. Has one on site. Also has some other engines coming in. I haven't seen this engine mentioned before as a fit. Is he full of beans?

I think any issue would be the bell housing to engine fit. I think that the truck engines in that era had a specific bell housing
that didn't fit the car engines.
also I think that the transmissions only fit that bell housing. That is what I remember, could be wrong. Good luck

Back when we had the garage and wrecker service we put a 390 into a Ford 800 wrecker. Ther distributor had a problem fitting in it because we used the 391 distributor (I don't remember now exactly why) but the guy at the machine shop bored it out and it worked fine. I believe we also used the 391 heads. It sure made a darned good wrecker, we pulled 18 wheeler tractors with it several times cause it was the biggest wrecker in the county at that time. I do believe the man is right and if I were you I'd try to get him to put the engine in it cause he has the experience with those engines. Keith

That's the plan Keith if I go for it. I'd just like to make sure before giving the go ahead. I've dealt with people before that were very convincing that turned out to not really have a clue what they're talking about. But, this is how he makes his living, so it would make sense if he was right.

So far, there have been three completely different blocks mentioned on this thread. The 351M-400, the 370 and the 390 are three different blocks.
In a perfect world, you'd want to replace the 370 with a 370 or perhaps even something with a few more cubes. I really wouldn't try to go with a smaller engine, unless you absolutely have to.

Believe the bolt pattern for the bellhousings are the same.
Wondering about the clutch though, L&L was the company
that made parts/kits for swapping 429/460 into F series
pickups that were born with a 351M/400. Automatics were easy, something
about depth of bellhousing, throwout arm and starter interface took
custom parts. Find a customer the man says he did job for and get
a testamonial.

Are you the fellow who was looking for Shop manuals for mid 70's Ford truck? I have a full set for the year 77 that could use a new home. Email me for more info.

How to tell the difference:
351 and 400- the thermostat housing bolts to the engine block beside the
distributor.
370, 429, and 460- the thermostat housing bolts to the intake manifold. these three
engines share the same bolt patterns except some Lincoln 460's do have an odd bolt
configuration for the bell housing.
I have not known of a F600 with a 351 or 400 installed at the factory, these engines
were in the one ton and smaller trucks. All F600 I've seen have used a 330, 361
HD, or 391 HD style OR the other block style (a 370).
I think your truck has a 330 which looks like a 390, or a 370 which looks like a 429
or 460. To replace either if these engines check for a balance weight on the
flywheel and be sure it is appropriate for the engine you use.

Mine is definitely the 370 Lima. I'd put another in if I could locate one. The 429 truck engine is supposed to be the other drop in fit. The 351-M400 runs very well, I'm just concerned about fit even though he says it's a snapper. I'll try to get more info on him and his work.

I will say this , being and OLD Ford master tech from back in the fun days the FE block was dead and GONE by77 and in the Med duty world came the 370 Med. Duty and the H D version that were and off shoot of the 385 block 429-460 . The 351-400 at best made wonderful BOAT ANCHORS for you BOAT . For ease of swapping stick with the engine family . Your 370 more then
likely has a two barrel carb and is a med . duty engine . Now not knowing where you are from or how far ya want to go looking for and engine for a DROP IN , I did see either on Akron/ Canton or the Cleveland Craigs list a Running Lima Block for sale for around 850 in the heavy equipment section. I don't do much truck work other then Hyda vac brake problems or a carb rebuild.

Tractor vet- Northern NY, 370 Lima with Holley 4bbl IIRC. Appreciate the advice. "Drop in fit" vs "I can make it fit" seem to be the issues. It's not going to do much road work, if any at all. Maybe 3-4 miles for some stone would be it. Still, I don't want problems because I chose wrong. Sigh.......
