That would have driven the cost up considerably.

Were buyers of the day really interested in such?
 
In Great Britain, these were used to pull freight wagons on the streets. The rubber had just enough give to not mash up the cobblestones. The owners
decked out their engines just like truck drivers do today. Some of these units were for running fairgrounds rides. Otherwise used anywhere you needed belt power. Coal was available. Petroleum had to be imported, until the North Sea oil fields opened up. They pretty much went out of business after WWII.
