Last year I made the conversion to 12 volt starter, which I'm well pleased with. I retained the two battery system, one new battery and a 3 or 4 years older one, connected in parallel circuit. The older battery is beginning to fade on me.

My questions: Is there any reason not to simply discard the old battery? What might be the downside? Is there a benefit to continuing with the two battery set up.

One battery will start it fine in warmer weather. But in cooler/cold temps, you will need the extra
amps.I know it seems like a waste, but always replace batterys in 'sets'.As the older battery can
prematurely destroy the newer one.

Great questions

""What might be the downside?""

Subject to the capacity and CCA ratings, in extreme cold weather only one battery (depends on its size) might not get the job done while
two in parallel (more CCA but subject to sizes) is more likely.

""Is there a benefit to continuing with the two battery set up"".

SEE THE ABOVE if the two in parallel were the same size you double your CCA

NOTE anytime two batteries are connected together, for load and charge balance, its best if BOTH are the same type, design, size, brand
and even age

Sure if the engine etc is in tip top shape and its not real cold one may get you by just fine, but if its real real COLD you may wish you
had two.......

Although we seldom get much really cold weather here in MS, it would appear I need to suck it up and buy a new pair of batteries to overcome the effect of the weaker battery. I'd hoped to get encouragement to simply discard one.

Thanks, y'all.

You can also built a battery box at the place of the existing one. Battery boxes attached to the frame are ugly.

I've seen some nicely crafted boxes that attached to the frame. It depends on the effort made. Then the existing battery boxes are left empty but still mounted so it does not detract from the tractor's appearance.
