The subdivision across the road from me continues to dispose of usable power equipment. In the last 3 years I've gotten; 4 lawn mowers, 2 6,000 watt generators, 2 2 stage snow blowers and a 6.5 hp shredder mulcher. All just needing the carburetors cleaned. This one took me 10 minutes to clean the float bowl and main jet. Thank you ethanol!

Nice pavers. I laid mine in a running bond. They shed water, drain thru, get just warm enough in winter sun to melt snow and ice but don’t get too hot in summer. I salvaged mine from a demolition project. Time and effort well spent. Your ‘freebies’ are great. I have a couple coworkers who don’t fix anything, just buy new if something happens. Unbelievable.

The cost to take a lawn mower or other small-engine tool to a dealer for repair often exceeds the value of the tool. If you can't work on it yourself, and get 5 or 6 years out of it, you might as well junk it and buy new. Facebook marketplace is full of small engine stuff that needs the carb cleaned.

That's right, some of the new mowers don't even recommend changing the oil.

Just use it a couple years and throw it away...

I guess they figure that's what's going to happen to the majority of them, so might as well play along!

Yea, my pavers were "recycled" also. Been in for 20 odd years. Could have had several thousand more but never thought I would use the several thousand I got. Boy was I wrong.

I have a Honda log splitter engine like that, had to remove it and tip it up side down to drain the oil JEEZZZ

Yup, push mowers are flat out money losers for a small engine mechanic. If you can't fix them in 15 minutes with less than $20 worth of parts, you have lost money. I you have more than a $35-$40 repair bill against it, you are going to own it because the customer will refuse to pick it up.

I get mowers and snowblowers off the curb all the time. Mostly just clean the carb. One i just had to put gas in the tank and have used it for 15 years. Had a newish MTD rider given to me. Said the motor was blown and locked up. All it was was the crank case and cylinder were full of gas and hydraulicy locked up.Drained the oil, cranked it over till the gas shot out the plug hole and put a fuel shut off valve on it. Used it for 3 years and then sold it for $500.

Blackhole 49,
Are you a Sub Buzzard on trash day, LOL?

We have many subdivisions down here that have age restrictions on them and so everyone is 55+.

Late in the day before trash day to sunrise you better be alert.
In order to avoid the subdivision buzzards in pickup trucks buzzing around trying to beat each other to the good stuff.

A high school classmate learned that 45 years age after completing an associate degree in small engine mechanics. There was no money in fixing small lawnmowers back then already. He moved into repairing motorcycles, snowmobiles and ATVs and made a very good lving. Monday mornings a string of guys would bring in their wrecked machines and pay good money to have them ready by the next weekend.

We have a30 - 40 year old sears gray in colour. The same story as above. When I was filling the maintenance position for several winters I did re work and check up on several pieces of equipment. [two saws, a couple of push mores and this 42 inch rider. It then was re parked in a
secondary work shop and when the summer men's group was using the building they asked the new maintenance man if he would do something with it. he told them to go a head and get rid of it. It was junk. one of the men told me; I laughed when he told me it probably was stuck not worth ??? I said it would start they laughed; took the car, cables and gas over, pulled it out, put the jumpers on, hit the key; one could have knocked the group of men over with a feather. Still, 4 years plus later still runs and cuts [ after new belts and blades in the last two years.
""""!!!!! Keep on reclaiming fellows """ """The little time it takes often pays large dividends.
