JD 101 plow question

I have what I think (?) is a John Deere 101 plow. Actually I have two, but only one cut this way.
Not being a "real farmer" or a "plow person" I was wondering why this
plow has slots cut horizontally in both moldboards? I have seen a few plows but this is the first like this. Why was it designed this way?
I may refurbish it but have no intention to use it I am just curious thanks, Tom/Idaho

Those are called slat molboards and are for clay soils so the scour easier and have less drag. They work good but are hard to get replacements for these days.
