Power is back on

Since our electric company can't keep the trees trimmed under their electric lines, to prevent a line from hitting a tree, and starting a fire. In a strong wind they just shut off the electricity to thousands of houses, and businesses. My power was off for only a day this time, depending on the wind it could have been longer. To save my cold stuff I used my motorhome generator, I have cords to my freezer, and refrigerators, and have a couple lights in the house. Only one day, I was getting tired of tripping over electric extension cords. I know some of you go for days without power. How do you do it? Stan

Back in the day they canned or smoked meat etc. But either way what your saying say how stupid it has gotten out on the west coast. About a month ago the electric company had tree trimmers out to cut the right of way if it can be done here it can be don there

Are they even allowed to trim or remove trees around the lines?

Around here the electric co's are fairly proactive on tree trimming, often times they spray some type of liquid death (I want some of whatever it is), or they obviously don't mix the stuff as if they paid for it. Property owners cuss and fuss about the line of death from the spray. Then huge wind or ice storms come along and property owners cuss and fuss about losing power due to trees on the lines. Nobody wins.

Having trees in the right of way or easement is kind of a no-no. I think the utility companies can take them out, but usually try to be nice and just keep them trimmed.

Once or twice a year our power goes out for a day or longer (we were in the dark nearly two WEEKS after an ice storm in 1991!).

We get by fine with a 3,500 watt portable generator feeding a transfer switch. The transfer switch supplies 3 key house lighting circuits, and circuits for the refrigerator, freezer and sump pump. It's not connected to the furnace as the wood stove keeps the house comfortable as long a fire is maintained.

Several neighbors have whole house standby generators. Would like one too but I can't justify the expense for our situation.

we have tree trimmer here on regular bases. i guess cheaper to hire tree trimmer than replace poles and line taken out by wind of ice storms

Our co-op trims every 5 or 6 years and do a good job.
If I see something that needs trimming before they come out, I call and they will be here usually the same day.
The 2 times we were out this year for long periods, it was the big April tornado and the hurricane several weeks ago.
Can't trim for things like that.
But we were ready with the generator.

There is no one stopping them from cutting trees out here in California. The tree companies have become downright pests coming around looking for work. They never did it for years because they didn't know they could be held responsible for fires started by their equipment. They will never catch up, stuff grows too fast.

We have a couple in this county. That got out of the fruit and nut state. They came into the store one day. Asking what the rules were for living here. Our mister nice guy told them. It is your f###### place. DO anything you f###### want to. They have become very good friends. He loaned them a tractor showed him how to use it.

Told them to forget that NAZI rule book. You are free.

I really doubt that it will be getting better for you in the near future. I would just bite the bullet and put in a NG standby generator with automatic transfer switch if me, but do not know how long you are planning to stay there. If putting in one, put in a 20KW, it is the biggest of the commodity residential generators and only a few hundred more than smaller units.

Just did it by my place a couple weeks ago, they come thru every 5 years. About 15 yrs ago they came thru and cut trees to widen it out to 75 feet from the center of the lines I ended up with quite a lot of firewood.

What brand of breaker panel ? There should be an interlock kit to make it into a safe and legal generator transfer switch .

Why trim them?
They should cut every at the stump under the lines at least.
And if you plant a tree under the line, get billed for somebody to come out and remove it if the land owner does not.
