Why do all the SMD I see have pumps or something under the diesel tank? Is this one missing something? Is this tractor stock? I cant seem to find a picture of another exactly the same. Is this stage 1 or stage 2? Seem to have a mix of people saying one or the other.

It's a Stage I, with a belly pump, no
live hydraulics. Stage II SM's had live
hydraulic, battery under the seat &
hydraulic reservoir under the fuel tank.

Yes, what your showing is Stage 2 that was apparently built with what is referred to as a hydraulic belly pump or LiftAll unit. These pumps were driven off the lower transmission shaft and would not pump when the foot clutch was pushed down. Most Stage 2 Super Ms had a hydraulic reservoir and valves in the box you are asking about under the fuel tank. That was part of the live hydraulics with a pump up in front of the distributor as shown in the photo in the link. I think if you went back to your first post some of this was mentioned there. Also in my opinion there are a few things fishy about the tractor in your pictures. For one it has a gated throttle that was found on later 400 model tractors. If this is correct for these tractors I hope someone lets me know, I am from far a M diesel expert.

The thing under the gas tank is part of
the stage 2 live hydraulic set up. That
tractor has the early style belly pump. It
is either a stage 1 or a stage 2 that was
ordered without the live hydraulics or had
the live hydraulics removed. I believe the
stage 2 used a 3 bolt starter and the
stage 1 used a 2 bolt starter so look
there to see if the tractor is a stage 1
or 2.

Mr, Hamilton, please accept my apologies but since we are nit picking this subject a belt pulley unit is an optional piece of equipment although many Farmalls did come equipped with them due to the need to power flat belt driven equipment for many operations. The same is true of a PTO, but in most cases the tractors were built with that option. Maybe you were just pointing out why it looks so open under the fuel tank. Interesting discussion.

It also should have an hr. Meter on it since it’s a 53. Plus it’s the wrong
headlights for sure. That’s the problem with a painted tractor, lots is
hidden. I am surprised it don’t have the regular hyd. System for the year of
it also. That serial # with bell housing may not be original either. Would
have to look closer at the build dates. Plus it was more common to have
the belt pulley than not have one.

As I mentioned in your other post its a stage 2 made in 53. Still built with a counter shaft driven hydraulic system. Has the other chassis changes a stage 2 has so was still considered a stage 2. Notice the left side of clutch housing and the two raised places in casting near the hydraulic outlet holes, then look at a stage one housing. That housing was one of the major changes when stage 2 tractors were built. Same housing was used on gas and diesel stage 2. Not so on stage one. stage one gas used a 2 bolt starter mounting. stage one and two diesel used 3 bolt mounting for starter. But the mounts in housing are spaced different. Stage one and 2 diesel starters don't interchange in stock form. Also the stage two used a lever and linkage to engage gear in flywheel and close the starter switch on starter. Where the starting and decompression levers normally mount is to the hydraulic reservoir unit . But since this one doesn't have that system a bracket different than a stage one is used for levers.

(quoted from post at 20:57:36 12/08/20) I forgot about the battery under the seat. That is apparent in the second image, but not the last. Throttle lever is goofy in the last pic, too.

Mike
Throttle is not original. Good bit were modified though. Friction discs on side of engine involved some work to adjust or change so some just changed the throttle linkage. Not the first to have parts of a 100 series throttle linkage installed. Tractor serial number was built in March of 53.

My saying is it is a '53 model w/bat under the seat. Wasn't the live hyds. an option in '53??
