Massey Ferguson 240 popping then dies!

Fueling issue needing some advice!

Got new tires put on my 240 this morning and was headed to do some work. The tractor started popping ever so often almost like a backfire and then just quit and would not start back up. Any ideas what would be causing this?

I think Ive burnt my starter up as well or have a bad ground as it wont even turn over anymore. Bad day

You don't mention where you are... If cold there, any chance the fuel is jelled? Also, how much time between the tire service and shutdown... If super short, any chance a fuel petcock was shut off?
Sounds like you'll first need to charge battery/resolve cranking issue, then you'll be able to loosen up a fuel supply line (best where it enters injector pump) and see if you have fuel.

Im in Mississippi man so its not cold here at all. Fuel filters were changed recently only 4 hours of run time on them. However the tractor did sit up a long time before this I drained all the old fuel out and replaced filters and its ran great up until today.

Everything is gravity fed up until the injection pump correct? Do I need to crack the line going into injection pump and then try cranking or what?

That is sign of motor running low and then out of gas. CHeck fuel line from tank to fuel air
mix to manifold.

Bad condenser is the common culprit anymore. The sides on the oval muffler on one of my tractors are rounded now because of explosions caused by a bad condenser cutting the ignition in and out before the tractor died.

You were correct. The Massey Ferguson 240 uses a Perkins AD3.152. He mentioned the injection pump as well.

I believe, and from what I see the parts books show, it has a transfer pump (the pumps usually have a hand priming lever on the underside of them) located on the right side of the engine between the tank and filters. VinceMF240 will have to look on his tractor, that is the best way to tell. I'm guessing he has not used the lever to prime the system, if it is there.

VinceMF240, you posted the filters were changed about 4 hours ago. What brand and part number filters did you install? I ask as there can be flow issues with some of the WIX/NAPA type if a seal gasket gets into the wrong place.

I am running Napa filters, I ended up priming the system and it fired right up. Have no idea what caused this though. What brand filters do you recommend?

I run WIX (they make the NAPA filters, so they are the same). Have used both for years at home and work, there is nothing wrong with these filters in my opinion. The problem is the human error during installation. As long as you put and keep the seal gasket up in the housing, where it belongs, there is no problem. A couple dabs of grease will keep them up there while the element is being installed. JMHO.

Traditional Farmer, a problem with fuel coming out of the tank could be the issue. It doesn't take much crap moving around in a tank to cause intermittent problems.
