Radiator water again

My JD 401 B industrial came to me with water in the pan. It sat for a long time like that. I even had to replace one of the timing gears from rust. Cam had to be reground, one of the mains had a spun bearing. I got that all straightened out. That was probably 8 or more years ago, and it has been going strong since. the problem with the water in the oil, was a pin hole in one of the liners. Not sure what caused that. Ever since that I don't want that to happen again. I am very careful what goes in my radiator. That's why I use distilled water, and JD coolant. May be an over kill, but it makes me feel good. Stan

There is a coolant conditioner additive and test strips for it too. Some of the coolant has it in and some does not. You will still need to changed it every so often . Not sure of the preferred interval ?

37 chief,

Our diesel trucks at work had water filter. Older style had an element in it with sacrificial plates. newer style had a spin on DCA filer, (Dry Chemical Additive). The hole in a wet liner is caused by electrolysis.

Treating the water with filters and good water helps a lot, liners had many pits in them at overhaul time, but usually no holes,

Guido.

Ford engines were known for that pinholing, it is called cavitation.

The right conditioner sure helps.

We had that happen to a JD 350 crawler, but dad caught it right away and we put a new sleeve in it. We were told it was cavitation caused by the PH of the coolant, you are wise to use good water.

Get the test strips for it and check each year or as often as comfortable with. Then add treatment as needed to it. This is the easiest way to maintain coolant against cavitation. I do our tractors once a year when checking freeze point for winter. You will need to run the engine as the treatment will freeze if not mixed in well.
