Cockshutt 30 on a baler

My grandfather at one point had a small army of Cockshutt 30s and Co-op E3s. Was always the baking tractor for a IH model 47 wire tie baler pushing 80lb bales. Quite a load! Is there a better sized, possibly smaller baler that would work better for one of these machines? Ive found myself recently acquiring a old puller Im rebuilding stock.

All 14 x 18 balers are going to require about the same power,There about 70 strokes a minute. That E-3 should work fairly good,At least you got live PTO! A, H or Super H didn't have that luxury!!!

I've run my NH 68 on my Cockshutt 30. Seems to work fine, they don't take a huge amount of HP as they came with an optional 15 HP Wisconsin. I've run 7 and 9 foot haybines with the 30 too, and a 5x6 Hesson round baler. The round baler was really pushing it, but I just made 3 1/2x6's

We had a Cockshutt 30 when I was young, used it on a 14T Deere baler, it had smooth power and a very low gear,, I thing they had the slowest low gear in the Industry at the time,, I think it was 5/8th MPH at full throttle. They were a very good tractor, but had poor brakes..

As said, most 14x18 balers will pull similarly. They all require a certain horsepower to run 'properly'.That doesnt mean you cant run an 'underpowered' tractor. It means you need to compensate. Either make smaller windrows,or just gear down. So your options are limited. go with a bigger tractor,or slow down.I have baled with an 8N Ford,a Farmall H,and even an F-20.Your Cockshutt 30 should be quite adequet.

We have one cockshutt that features a high/low and another that is the straight transmission. Seems the early ones lacked this feature.

I've never run a 30 on the square baler but have done many years with the 40. There was never a time that power was a shortage. The shear pin on the flywheel would give up long before the engine ever felt the strain of going too fast on a heavy swath.

A friend of mine has a 30 with the Hi/Lo tranny.......goes about 22 MPH in high, high. Very good all around tractor, especially with the LPTO.
