Project 460, value and parts availability?

My son is looking at getting a project 460. He's 19 and this would be his first project. It rolled sideways down a small hill, twice; first was the accident (nobody hurt, luckily!), second was a failed recovery attempt that same day. Supposedly the engine had just been rebuilt and it had no other issues. It's been sitting 10 - 12 years. We looked at it a couple days ago. The engine will not spin by trying to turn it with the fan. Whatever the levers are to the right of the steering wheel... I think there were 4 and 2 are broken off. Also, the right axle housing is broken up next to the center section. We think we found the other rear rim & tire lying nearby. I'd guess it to be maybe $400 - $500 scrap value? We're in south central Hichigan; I haven't hauled in any scrap for a couple years and not sure what current prices are. How hard would it be to find another axle housing? What are the chances that the axle shaft got bent or damaged anything in the differential/center section?

That's a piece of tree branch stuck in the exhaust pipe. I assume it's been there since the accident but not certain.

That thing is going to be a serious effort just hauling somewhere for free. Get a running model and restore that. Pass on the junk or just sell it for parts. I admire the ambition but use it wisely.

If the loader isn't sprung too bad, buy it for the loader and parts and find another 460 for your son to work on. That thing screams moneypit!!!!

I live in SE Michigan and scrap is $200 a ton currently. If that exhaust wasnt covered it swallowed water and locked up the engine, possibly the transmission too (water coming in from the top). The loader is worth something and a few other parts. A 460 narrow front sold at auction in Ohio for $800 recently, in excellent shape and ran good. IMO I would get this for parts only or pass altogether. Plenty of tractors around yet. 460s are a good tractor, that 6 cylinder engine at full throttle is a nice sound. Still plenty of row crops around.

Sitting that long with the exhaust open, the engine is now ruined.

About the only thing salvageable would be the loader, if it's not twisted, and if you found a tractor it would fit.

Has your son done a ..project.. like this before? A ..project.. is fine a ..project from he11.. not so much. If bought real cheap may be a good parts donor. Move on start from a complete tractor, should be able to find plenty of those models. Good luck!

You find a decent 460 to fix up then u buy this one for parts. He will be totally lost tying to restore this unit. Even experienced guys wont touch it.

I have a 460LP that I use frequently and it runs great.

That said, I agree with the others that this is not a good project base. If the roll was violent enough to bust an axle housing then there could be other damage such as bent or tweaked front end that will not be immediately apparent.

There is likely some good parts in there if you needed them such as those split weights on the rear wheels or internal transmission and pto parts. Grill parts and side sheet metal might be ok. Fast hitch probably survived the roll too.

If the exhaust has not been covered then the motor will require a complete overhaul and that's if you don't have a busted casting somewhere from water freezing inside. That the motor was freshly rebuilt is now totally irrelevant.

If the exhaust was covered, pull all the spark plugs and look at each one for rust. Shine a bright light in each plug hole and look for rust or moisture. If none then you might be able to free it up. Fresh motor will stick easier than one that is well worn.

I would say 200-300, maybe 400 tops if the spark plugs look good, get the parts you need and scrap what's left.

Keep in mind that the value of scrap is at the scale, not in the woods. If someone were to haul that in for scrap they would have to consider their equipment time in the getting to it and the recovery and the transportation, which could very likely exceed the scrap payment. Scrap value could be less than zero.

If the owner gave you the tractor and $500 to haul it away to get it up and running/usable you'd still have at least 3X in it what you could buy one for and drive it on your trailer.

Hate to see any tractor left for dead but this one should stay right where it is sitting unless the owner wants to pay for it to be moved to a salvage yard. OK, so I see a pickup truck next to the tractor. Why was another plan not used to rescue the tractor after the rollover other than straight back up from the bottom? Did the owner get an insurance payment and then said the heck with it?

His wife told him it was a message from above and not to touch it again, citing the fact that the same accident happened twice within hours with no injuries. Not trying to be inflamatory to anyone, that's just what happened.

Not a 460, but there is a nice project IH 400 for sale April 10 at Cripesauction.com. Non running but it is complete and original. Not beat up. At least take a look at the web site.

OK, but the pickup truck got down to the site safe enough. Why not take the 460 the same route presumably winding up back at the top? Why not hire a wrecker tow truck and just pull straight up from the back end of the tractor to the top? At the time there would have been 2,000 dollars worth of investment just sitting there in limbo. Seems like letting money go to waste versus a 100 dollar or so wrecker bill. I get that you and I did not have a say so on that day but it just seems strange.

i would have to agree with others. if it was free and YOU have a way to haul it home ok. otherwise its not worth it. I've learned the hardway about a cheap tractor that had water in the exhaust. that tractor turned into a parts tractor

there is a 460 or 560 on faacebook marketplace in southern mi i think.. more $ but in way better shape.

Between setting for 10 years and the damage, that is a parts tractor (at best). Keep looking. This one would burn him out very quickly.

The engine is probably not any good if the exhaust hasn't been covered. Don't know if there would be any demand for the loader?

Well, MeAnthony, it looks like you have a pretty strong consensus, LOL. It is unusual to have so many pile onto something with no disagreement!

I'm thinking you vastly underestimated the wrecker bill.

Most likely they tried to drag it back up the hill with another tractor, because it was free and you didn't have to publicly admit to doing something stupid. Chain broke, and down she went again.

Nowadays people do stuff like that and wear it like a badge of honor. Yuk it up. Go viral on social media. Lookee meee, I did something dumb and survived! Back then people had a sense of shame.

I don't really understand it either but you are correct. Truck and tractor are facing south; if you were facing north and took a large U-turn to the right, there is a more gradual incline to the top of the hill.
If you were on the tractor as it sits now, the hill it rolled down is to the left (east). 1st accident was the owner/operator's fault. Neighbor came over with another tractor, hooked up chains, tried to pull it back up the same hill it had just rolled down; chain broke and down she went again. At that point his wife told him count your blessings and walk away!.

Very much appreciate all the input! I have advised my son of the general opinion here and left the choice up to him.
