question about old Ariens Jet tiller carb /Briggs &

Hi guys --

New user here. My name is Drew, and I live in western Michigan. I'm trying to resuscitate an old Ariens Jet rototiller that was running a few years ago, but has been sitting for a while, and now won't fire up. It also may be leaking a bit of gas from somewhere.

This carb is one I'm having a lot of trouble finding information on, so as to either rebuild or replace it. And both the tiller & engine's ID stickers are, unfortunately, illegible. I believe the carb may be what's referred to as a large, one-piece Flo-jet, but am not positive. I did find a replacement carb available online (please see pic), but the holes on it for mounting the carb to the intake elbow are rotated 45 degrees from the ones on my existing carb. I can't find anything at all online that looks like the carb I've got. There's also even surprisingly little info out there on Jet tillers, as far as I can tell.

Please see pics. And if it helps, the engine shroud has 81302 943560 5909180 stamped on it.

I'd be grateful if anyone could please point me in the right direction as to what I need to get this thing running. Is there another carb that could be substituted?

Thank you!

looks almost like an Ariens JPB 60, hope you can go from there. Here's a parts manual on ebay https://www.ebay.ca/itm/381261259243?

Those numbers are what you need Model# Ser# . DO NOT Throw that carb away. There are no replacements being made for Old Briggs Engines.

You should be able to get parts for
your carb, I don't think it's a large
though. Don't forget to remove load jet
before splitting carb where the 4
screws are.

Have you taken the carb apart and looked inside?

Chances are it is just gummed up from sitting with old gas in it. Usually you can ease it apart, clean it up, scrape out the jets with a stiff wire, and not need a kit or parts.

Here is a link to the Briggs parts list that includes your model number ..82302.. The Briggs carb kit number is 291691,
reference 121. You can find quite a range of prices for it. Actual B and S brand name kits look to go for $30 - $45. I agree
there is a possibility that you can get it running without a kit, but that will be the luck of the draw.
Poke here

Thank you for the replies, guys -- I appreciate it!

My son, who is pretty good mechanically, took it apart & ran it thru his ultrasonic cleaner. He apparently didn't poke thru the jets, though, to clean them. I'll probably have to take a look at it myself, to be sure. I was kind of surprised to see so much of the exterior paint still on the carb, after the ultrasonic -- would've figured that'd get stripped off. At that point, I wasn't super-involved yet with getting the tiller running.

I'll try to find some diagrams for the carb, now that I know the rebuild kit number (thank you!), but as a relative novice to carb work, what's the load jet, and how does splitting the carb before removing it mess it up? I'll definitely be careful with that.

Also -- is that tube going from the boot under the air cleaner to the updraft tube some kind of PCV thing to burn crankcase blowby? If so, would that place the date of this tiller sometime in the 1970's, after emissions stuff started on cars?

Thank you for your help! You guys are great.
