Ford 3000 Live PTO Lever Won't Shift To Disengage

Hello All,

1971 Ford 3000 8 Speed, Live PTO.

I snapped my PTO shaft off right where it comes out of the tractor. I replaced it with a new one, and the PTO spins just fine. I put the clutch all the way in to shift the PTO lever to disengaged, and the lever wouldn't budge (the PTO stopped spinning though).

One issue while replacing the shaft that may be relevant:
The Shop Manual procedure said to engage the PTO lever before removing the shaft. I did that, but when testing out the replacement shaft by itself I pulled the shaft to remove it and it seemed to be stuck so I pulled hard. The Shift Lever disengaged and the shaft came out. The Shift Collar dropped down a little, but I was able to push it back to the right position with the new shaft. I don't remember when in this process I pulled the shift lever back to engaged but I did somewhere along the way.

So:
What have I done?

How do I fix it?

Can I use the tractor & PTO temporarily or is that going to make it worse?

Thanks!
Special K

If.. the shift collar is still in place... and you can FULLY engage it... then yes you can use it.

If its hard to engage or disengage,,, it usually means the pto shaft is twisted.. or the collar is twisted, damaged or the input shaft is twisted or damaged.

It your new pto shaft a new or used shaft??

If you can fully engage it so it does not pop out, then yes you can just leave it engaged.

the fact you had trouble pulling the new shaft out(iiuc) tells me something is still twisted on the new shaft or the collar. In my 4 or 5 expierences, is usually the shaft that is twisted.

Yeah, I could see from the rear with a flashlight that the shift collar was still in place. I lined the new PTO output shaft up with the grooves on the inside of the shift collar while reinstalling.

The PTO output shaft is new.

It was engaging and disengaging just fine with the old output shaft right before I pulled it out to replace it. I couldn't have bent any of these things by hand just installing the new output shaft could I?

And I don't know that it's hard to disengage, more like impossible. It seems like something is stuck. Could the shift collar not be lining up with the shift fork properly?

Live Updates:

I drained the rear axle fluid again. Then took the bolts out of the PTO retainer to remove the output shaft. Suddenly the lever started to work. When I disengage the shift lever the PTO Output shaft pops out an inch or two. When I engage the shift lever it pulls the PTO Output shaft back so the retainer is tight against the rear.

What's all that mean?
