Mower blade tip speed...sfpm rating...

Do older mowers, say 2004 - 2010 have lower blade tip speeds

than the newer one? I've heard the newer ones do a better job

of eliminating striping because of higher sfpm and deeper decks.

tia..

Hi, striping by and large is caused by the incorrect setting of the
tractors top linktoo long or too short. When using our 5 6 PZ
drum mower I always set it to be nose-down slightly. In terms of tip
speed I never worked that out but two drums blade tips when driven
at 640 equated to a straight-line speed of around 180 miles per hour.

Woods RM660 is set up for 540 pto rpms.
Jubilee at 1550 rpms makes close to 540 pto
I did the math once. At 2100 engine rpms on the Jubilee, the mower tip speed was
around 200 mph. Mower has 2 ft blades. You could hear the sharp blades cut the grass
like a sharp knife cutting cabbage.
One time the wind blew off my hat. I hit the brakes only to have the outer blade nick
the bill of the hat and send it out the shoot about 10 ft. Got lucky it didn't eat my
free Menards hat.

Using the Kubota on the RM660, I'm pushing 2400 engine rpms to get 540 pto rpms.

The Farmall at full speed is pushing 540 pto rpms.

I think my tip speeds on both tractor's mowers under 200 mph. Still does a good job.
200 mph is a little better at cutting and spreading clippings. No grass clumps if
grass is dry.
Do the math if you want feet/min or feet/second.

I am just guessing but I think this guy may be talking about riding lawn mower tip speeds. That has
been addressed several times by the out dower Power equipment manufacturer association. speed and
safety are always of concern , that is why some of the cheaper mowers do not have the OPMA sticker
they cannot meet safety standards. Blade design is now a big concern like does the blade induce
suction or is it just a flat metal blade. Takes more power to turn the high suction blade but they
do a better job mowing . Then when we sell that high lift blade where there is a lot of sand the
decks wear out. Lot to consider ion design of a simple lawn mower.

Some say a Dixie Chopper has the fastest blade tip speed.
18500 f/m = 210 mph

My old Toro ZTR (late 80's or early 90's) has a blade tip speed
of 22,000 FPM and will mow at 12 MPH, so I would say no.
I think the difference is in whether you buy a home owner/big
box store version or an actual commercial style mower.
Not only are the commercial mowers faster, they cut better and
ride a lot smoother than the cheaper box store versions.
Of course, they're a lot more money if buying new. Like $15,000!
I bought mine used for $1400, sold the bagging system for $400,
used it for 10 years, then rebuilt the engine. Used it again today.

years ago, I saw that there is a reg that limits to 17,000 fpm. anything before that, who knows?

Yes! I have 18 hp riders, 20 hp, and 22 hp riders (came with the larger hp over the years) and no doubt the later models with the
larger engines have faster ground speed and throw clippings out farther and cleaner using the same basic deck design...so it's gotta
be tip speed and blade design.....46 2 blade, stamped steel, smooth discharge path increasing to 4 height at the chute and wide
open side part of it is they seem to come with lifting blades and the rest of it is folks want the two things I mentioned so 22 hp is the
craze in the lower width mowers.

The higher hp is to drive the above. Seems Kohler has come out with their 7000 series V twin 22 and my latest Craftsman purchase
has one. Really a nice, accommodating engine....I guess the Courage single 20 hp (that lots of folks including me had on their 20-46
Husqvarnas) gave them a black eye and they resolved to get their name back. I preferred Kohler for years before the Courage and
dumped the brand as a result. Guess it's back in good standing.
