Brush beater question

So, I have always wondered why folks run a chain from the top link all the way out to the tail wheel area on brush beaters. I have looked at mine and there is a fairly substantial frame on it so I wouldn't think it would be needed for support. Maybe I am missing something? Here is a picture of mine.

From the look of the land in the image, the contour is not radical. Most hilly/lumpy places need the tail to be able to
change heights. the chain allows this to happen when the tractor wheels are in a ditch/depression, and it prevents bending
parts with a rigid top link. Jim

Newer cutters have a flex hitch for the top link that allows the cutter to pivot on the lift arm pins. Old ones dont have this feature so a chain is used instead of a rigid top link. If everything is rigid and you go through a ditch the rear of the cutter cant rotate up and something may give.

Before I acquired a cutter with a floating top link hitch, I used a section of chain as my top link.
Allows the cutter to follow the contour of the land.

Yep you don't really need top link while
cutting.I have a Bush Hog twin spindle with
two point draft link hookup and hydraulic
lift on tail wheels.Works really good.

I was using a 5 foot King Kutter behind a JD M that we used to have, that I had built a 3-point for. It didn't have the capability to lift
the whole mower, so I wasn't using a top link, but it worked fine just lifting the front. Until, the bottom corner of the mower hit a stump,
the back flipped up, and the top link frame on the mower hit the back of my seat! It didn't really hurt anything, but it scared me, so I
never used it on the little JD again. I have heard that some people that use a chain run it through a pipe to prevent that. Our new Bush
Hog has a flexible top link bracket, like many of them do, that allows the mower to float.

Looking at your country in background,
it's understandable. Around here, chain
takes the top-links place to let you get
through low spots without breaking things.
