Grinding hay

I am considering taking some alfalfa hay to our local feed supplier and get it ground up. We have a bunch of lambs and they waste too many stems. Thoughts? Mix it with feed?

We have a neighbor that has sheep and we had a flock (25) years ago. The neighbor tub grinds most of their hay and the sheep eat every bit of it. I hated that they would shake out the leaves and leave the stems. I always wanted to grind and pelletize the alfalpha so we could get all the bang for our buck. You'll behappy with ground hay and so will the sheep. Your wallet may not like going on a diet though. lol gobble

When I was raising pigs I used to grind alfalfa for the gestating sows. Ground it myself with the Owatonna 95 mixer-mill. Add some corn-oats and bean meal. Made nice feed and the sows loved it.

It does take some extra time and patience, the Owantonna/Arts Way grinder are good, but for hay i liked the 21 inch Gehl a little better, and i owned a Art-Way,or grind in a tub grinder first, like a Haybuster, but that all cost money time and money too, but it will stretch your hat supply!

Will a feed mil grind hay? I know we used to put about 4 bales through our New Holland grinder back in the day. You had to be careful not to put in to much or it would squeak the belt from slippage. We never tried getting the elevator to grind hay for us in the feed though.
