Hauling 30 big squares on flatbed.

Today was the first day I got a chance to haul big squares on my field flatbed. 30 bales was quite a load in the hills for the 4640, but I never felt it was too heavy or tipsy. My other hauling rig is a pair of bale trailers I made from knight 716 slingers and 14 plow and I pull them together behind a 4840 and can get 26 on them. Got 166 made today.

There is a trailer dolly under there. Believe it or not, I paid more for the dolly than I did for the trailer. I have just over a grand in it.

Matthies,
Down hills is a lil interesting. I am gonna see what I can do about modifying the brakes the trailer is old enough that it it does not have full air brakes. It rolls on its own with no parking brake, but it does have skinny air brake chambers. I would like to set up a hydraulic cylinder to actuate the brakes

When you mentioned hills, I was thinking of brakes.
Any way to add a 12v air compressor?
Or maybe a bottle of CO2, nitrogen or some compressed gas?
Back in the 60's, my dad carried a bottle of Freon 12 to air up flat tires. Worked
well. Was about $.50 a # .

I think you will find if you try to use the old chambers you will have oil leaks all over the place most air line is only good for about 500 PSI and is not necessarily oil compatible. Why not just mount an air compressor on the tractor you plan to pull it with. Then with a trailer brake lever in the cab you could control the brakes with it. If you go to a parking brake air chamber on the axles it will complicate the brakes a bit. By using a pulley driven compressor you would have to hook up oil and water connections for lubrication and cooling. I suppose a guy could just mount a regular compressor from an air tank for it.

Agree with Caterpillar guy. Get a compressor and tank off a truck with air brakes. You could run the compressor off the PTO even.

He was going to put a hydraulic cylinder to operate the brakes . Never saw anything about using the air system of the trailer with oil ?

That load would be a little more weight then our big silage wagons as i have seen 36 to 38000 lbs on them at times and they are a hand full on the hills around here way more then we should be handling . Brakes are a good idea if your running the roads or have hilly field lanes. Ya already have and air brake system even though they are of the OLD WAY . It does not take a lot of air pressure to make them work . If you ever drove a semi with a brake application gauge most times your only putting 20 to 40 psi to the brake to WHOA the load , now if it had the Piggy back parking brake then that needed around 65-70 to release the spring side . Like Cat guy said and old semi hand valve would work and for and air tank heck you can get small tanks new for trucks cheap , as for a compressor one off and old gas burner truck that only requires and oil line and a drain back could be mounted to run off the fan belts and set up with and electric clutch hookd to a pressure switch to kick it on and off when needed.

How far is the haul? Are there restrictions from local, state or other law enforcement? Wisconsin hills if I remember correctly. But beautiful countryside in the areas of Wisconsin I've traveled.

12 volt or pto or hydraulic driven air compressors are much more common now with their use on all the new planters and other new equipment. Probably not cheap but
should soon find used stuff around?
