Just wondering how many used cars will hit the market

Just wondering how many used cars that were in a flood will be sold or scraped?
Are there laws preventing cars that were in a flood from being sold to people that aren't aware they are buying a car that was under water??

I think the bigger worry is the mandate that, IIRC, 50% of vehicles sold by 2025 must be electric. Not NEW VEHICLES sold, but vehicles sold! Think about that for a second...

Used cars will be given away?
I'm not worried. I plan to keep my old cars and truck.
Can always rebuild engine, rebuild transmission
and get parts. .
My 2005 car is still running great.
My concern is will they tax the heck out of gas and diesel?
I watch counting cars. They can do a total rebuild and make car or truck into a custom.
There may a new business. People doing total rebuilds and turning your old car into a one of a kind classic.

I know a guy who lost a car in the flood that hit Manhattan in 2010. It was a restoration, but the insurance company totalled it.
About six months later, he saw an add for another one in Oklahoma. Different color, but identical. He went down and bought it. Once back, when he was trying to register it, he discovered it was the one that was totalled. He could only get a salvage title, and the insurance company wouldn't cover it.
They are supposed to be scrapped after being under water.

If the vehicle has been totally submerged it should be totaled by the insurance company...If its only been partially submerged it may be fixed up,but it should be on Carfax....Some of the more crooked insurance companies can seem to find ways around that....

My late MIL's Toyota Corolla once had 12 inches of water inside the car and we took it to my place and dried it out by using floor 4 fans for 2 days...Nothing got in the engine or transmission..It was still running good and had no electrical problems when she quit driving and sold it 8 years later...It rained 4 inches in less than one hour and rather than go and move it from a low place where it was parked, she just watched water get in it!!!

I believe there are laws stating that flood cars have to be totaled, but that doesn't stop nefarious types from buying them at wholesale auction, and marketing them as good cars.

Most likely if you watch the major news networks in the next few months there will be a story on flood cars and how to identify one so you won't get scammed. Not everyone will see the stories, and fall victim to the scammers selling these cars.

The key is you can't get them dried out, ever. Feel the carpet. If it's damp or you find sand/silt/mud, walk away. It's a flood car. Just like a murder scene they can clean the cars up pretty well but there will always be evidence left behind. Look underneath, if you see a water line or evidence of sand/silt/mud on the frame, walk away. It's a flood car.

Services like Carfax make it more difficult as they usually have a record of the flood damage, not always, but usually. Even in the face of that, nefarious types are very convincing, and can often B.S. their way into a sale especially if the car is cheap.

Carfax only works if an insurance claim is filed.
People with flooded cars may not have insurance or Car rental places are self insured,
no reported insurance claim.

With any vehicle purchase, it is important to closely review the title before handing over any money.

I would be especially leery of any vehicle previously registered in a coastal state.

Yes there are laws but there is also a way to turn a salvage title into a regular title if you take the car to a special inspection center after repairing damage.

In some states, not all.

Care to quote your source? There is no such mandate that I can find.

The only thing I see is the use of words "shared aspiration" and figures of 40-50%. I speculate that they know it's not a realistic goal, which is why they haven't even defined the can to kick down the road.

Those builds are expensive. Most be done have the ability to shoot that much cash at one time. Payment plans are there for a reason.

I just spent 10 minutes looking and don't find ANYONE else making this claim. Some states have made regulations regarding new car sales restrictions, such as WA. state and CA. but nothing mentions used cars at all. What country you in? gm

Awe come on George. With as many times as this has come yup here do you really not know about the law?

Why does every car accident not get reported to Carfax?
In other instances, accidents may never get reported to anyone; or repairs could be made by the owner or at a repair facility that doesnt report to CARFAX.

Awww Come on SV, what's the big deal?? I have gassed up in plenty of places where the pumps are powered by diesel powered generators. Electric lines don't run everywhere that people want to drive and be able to fuel up regardless of what thast fuel may be.

SV,
Musk moved headquarters to Tx. He is trying to get permission to connect his Solar charging stations into Tx power grid.

Toyota is going to make charging stations. Not sure is they will be solar.
Every car company I've researched have EV's in R&D and are looking at making charging stations too.
From an investment standpoint, I'm not interested. Not that appealing.
You build an EV and the charging stations will follow. Later than sooner.

I think Musk sells solar charging stations too. Some of his solar panels look like shingles. Expensive.

We don't have to like it but Times are changing real fast.

After hurricane Andrew Florida found out their gas stations need back up power to pump the gas. Not sure how may gas stations have generators now. Not a bad idea. If I recall it took over 3 weeks to get power restored in Florida.
Can't run personal generators without fuel.

I'll bet we haven't seen anything yet.
State and Fed will make gas very expensive and driving EV will be a bargain.
Look at our friend to the north and England.
Their taxes are way more than ours.

(quoted from post at 14:08:09 09/01/21) Start a new business have a generator to drive around to recharge EV that have run out of juice on the road.

A friend has an EV. I never knew. He told me about driving from NH to somewhere in the deep south every month. He explained to me how recharges are fast, easy, convenient, inconsequential. Doesn't that make you want to scream? That something that is supposed to be so difficult that it has to fail, but it turns out to be nothing?

Used to work at a station that had a backup generator. Remember a few times there was a city wide power outage and we were the only ones able to pump gas.

So, unless you have a very good solar system that survived the storm you would be in the same boat as gas generators.

I've got the charge limitation solved take the Honda portable generator and put a hitch on it to pull behind the car now you just increased the range to a 1000 miles to the charge. :)

My mistake relying on my memory. It's 2030 and NEW vehicles. The "all vehicles" part was the entire US Federal gov't fleet. https://news.yahoo.com/nnalert-sign-order-aiming-half-090047307.html

It is an Executive Order, made Aug. 5th and Executive Orders have no legal standing and are unenforceable.I
EO's are a way to placate the squeaky wheels for awhile.

They are supposed to disclose flood
damage. I think the title gets branded,
like a reconstructed.
Lots of vehicles out of Texas after the
flooding a few years ago were popping up
with clean titles.

Can not do that in the North east or in Canada . The road salt used in the highways will ruin an untreated vehicle in 5-7 years . If cleaned and oiled regularly , 12-15 years . 20 years is a real stretch . Everything is rusting through and stuck ..

If you're gonna state something at least say it right... DoubleO7 is mostly right on this. It is an executive order, not a law. While it has some legal standing it isn't per say a law. A law which is part of a normal bill passed through the house and senate require a similar action to repeal it. An executive order can be repealed at any time. In the case of a executive order many times they are treated as laws, but in other situations federal judges suspend the requirement to comply with these orders depending on who/what/where etc. Not the same.

There are all sorts of EO's that are in effect and since they MODIFY existing law, are in effect law.

So the can-kicking has already begun.
