I like the driveshaft drive rather than a belt.

That actually uses a double b elt arrangement to drive the transmission drive shaft from the engine.
And a second set of double belts to drive the PTO drive shaft. So while shaft drive is better, it still uses belts on these.
However, these belts run straight down to the pulleys, they don't bend around a mule drive or make any crazy twists and flexes, so they tend to last a long long time compared to newer machines that do have all the crazy twists and bends.
I have a 1050 and a 1254, same setup

Long ago I got a used 1050 from a dealer with a roto tiller like this. It's heavy built but the disappointment to me is the tines turn too slow. I still have the Bolens but instead of the roto tiller (which is in the back of the barn) I use it with a moldboard plow in the fall and field cultivate with a 2 wheel Simplicity in the spring.
