Plastic fuel tank repair?

I fueled my JD 2355N Thursday, and it began spewing fuel- the tank has split at about the midpoint. I was able to get it inside and capture most of the fuel in several buckets as it leaked out.

Anyone have success with repairs of a plastic diesel fuel tank? The DIY epoxies don't look super successful. A replacement is $720-800 from Deere, waiting on reply from a salvage company.

I tried searching this site, with many results, few of any consequence.

Talk to someone at an auto body shop many of
them have plastic welders. There are different rods
for different polymers.

Any idea why it cracked?

Something stress it, hit it? Possibly it can be repaired if the cause can be
remedied.

If it's sun baked, probably time for a new one.

I do a lot of small engine work and honda bond has been the only silicone type of product that has held up to constant gas and
not leak. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

Likely the tank cracked at a "stress point" where it flexes a bit under vibration and/or from the weight/mass of fuel slopping around.

To make a lasting repair would require the repaired area to be AT LEAST as strong as it was when new.

Probably ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I will check with my local body shop for results, I had not thought of them. I've heard good things of the Honda bond, as well.

The tank split on a mold joint, right where it exits the front panel. The tank extends up from the front panel and is behind the nose of the hood. I replaced the plastic nose piece of the hood a couple of years ago as it had cracked in multiple places, and the new one split rather quickly- like it was being twisted. I will follow up to see if the front panel is stressing both items- it has not been hit or show any dents. I can't see the cast base twisting, but will check that, too.

Thanks, again.

I've had good results with fibre glass repair kits on plastic fuel tank. clean tank well, put piece of glass cloth over,
coaated with the expoxy, of oourse. Just as you would repair vehicle fender.

That tractor gas tank is sure an odd and convoluted shape.

Before any repair attempts, you need to find out what type of plastic it is made of.
Some plastics can be patched with goop of different types.
Other types can not and need specific procedures.

Did you get the tank out of tractor?
Look for a tiny triangle with a number inside molded or branded into the plastic somewhere.

You could do a temporary fix by plastic welding it but then the break would need to be covered with a fiberglass cloth and plastic bonder epoxy. It would probably give you more time to search for a deal on a new one. If the plastic is cracked it's going bad and will
continue to crack and may possibly crack elsewhere.
