Looks like the cylinder is plumbed to give pressure both up and down...

I too built a blade for an HG. It had outside arms and lifted off the track frames. Handy little rig. Wish I had never sold it for $650 back in the sixties when I bought the D2 for$1000. Never had a blade on the D2. Had to wait for the eighties when I bought D4.

Tom, I bought a D2 when I built my fish pond.
Did some work on it and finished my pond and sold it for what I had in it.
