Morning project replaced straight pipe with muffler

Decided to get rid of the straight pipe on this thing. It doesnt look right and its kind of loud. As my wife will tell you I cant afford to loose anymore of my hearing!

The pipe is welded to the collar screwed into the exhaust manifold. Luckily it unscrewed pretty easy.

I took the pipe out and cut it down to length. I have to be under 90 inches to make it out the door!

That looks better. Now maybe I wont need ear plugs when I start it up!

Don't throw away the earplugs just yet. Those mufflers don't quiet the tractor down all that much. There is no baffle in the muffler to redirect the noise so it's mostly a straight pipe. It'll still be loud enough to damage your hearing.

I have no idea why someone put that pipe on the block drain like that. Maybe it was easier to drain it into a bucket? Anyway it came that way when we got so it left it alone. Hope it doesnt get caught on anything!

I never could understand why anyone would want to run a straight pipe exhaust on a tractor. I have lost at least half my ability to hear in my left ear from a lifetime of looking over my right shoulder. And I always kept good mufflers on my tractors. Didnt have hearing protection until it was too late. I never run a open tractor without ear plugs now. Or lawn mower, or chain saw either

Well Good for you!
I wear hearing aids because of losing my
hearing to loud tractors and machinery.
The loudest was dads 4010 Gas pulling
a 13 ft Chisel plow. After a couple of passes
thru the field riding on the fender, I was in so
much pain from the stock muffler I had to get
off the tractor.
When we are younger, it doesnt seem like it
can be so hurtful. But the damage is there,
and hearing aids are NOT cheap.

what will happen is it will plug up with rust being so long. so it wont do what the guy wanted anyhow. unless your cooling system is nice and clean of course.

An Oliver 88 with a straight pipe in the evening when the air is still. Music to my ears, two counties away. (;>))

My uncle ran a strait pipe on the super H. In the spring helping clear the pile of manure from the dairy it was awful. One day coming back from the field I saw a cherry bomb glass pack muffler on the side of the road it had a new clamp on it must not have tightened it enough. I picked it up took it to the garage and got rid of that strait pipe. It was so quiet I could hear the fan LOL. Uncle said I ruined his tractor.

I'll give you one, I just felt like it.....4230 1 1/2 outlet piper with a 4 inlet due to the engine being used on the 4430 with the turbo,
drove me nuts....since an internal combustion engine is an air mover....Dodge Ram taught GM that simple fact (my personal vehicle
experiences). Nice 4' Chrome pipe, parade queen. Soundguard cab sucked up most of the noise when farming, ear muffs the rest.
Decorated with American flags, all shined up (cosmetic restoration) and idling along, it was an attention getter.

It seemed to run cooler haying in the summer and whether or not it affected the 400 cu in's lust for diesel (as compared to my newer
compact tractors), I don't know.
