18.4 on a 4020

Hello,
Still pricing tires for my 1969 4020. It currently has 16.9x38 tires which are quite a bit more then 18.4x38, hence why Im considering what others have done in the past. My fenders are all the way up on the 4020 now. How close will the new 18.4 cut it next to the fender? I dont want something that is snug and gets dirt hitting it constantly.

Here is 18.4/38's on a 3020.Clear just fine.

Deere used fender spacers when JD #45 were mounted on new generation tractors. They moved the fenders up and back to clear the loader masts. They looked like two channels welded to make a box, probably about 4 inches square. You could probably make some from 4x4x.25 wall tubing. The ends were angled for better wrench clearance on the end nuts, but the inside nuts still needed to be tightened one half flat at a time with an open end wrench. We had to remove those spacers every fall to mount the 237 corn picker and then reinstall them to mount the fenders and loader for winter.

Our 4020 has 18.4-34 on it IIRC ? they have plenty of clearance to even run tire chains.

Sorry, no. They were a real PITA to work with.

See if you do need spacers first. If you do need spacers, it may be simplest to have some longer U-bolts made at a truck shop and make some simple spacer blocks.

My 4020 has spacers with the 18.4-38 height tires. (Actually, it has 520/70R38 tires, (same width as 20.8, but same height than 18.4).
I do not think fenders that barely clear tires look right on a tractor.
Mine are made of tubing so the regular U bolts are used, but I have a bolt on gusset to reduce stress on the fender mount, and help to have the fender very rigid. A must have if you have an heavy rider on the fender...
