Tire Pressure - Wow!

Checked the tire pressure on the rears today. They are 6 ply 16.9 R 30's. They are supposed to have 27 pounds in them. Mine had less than five. They weren't noticeably low at all. Wow! I
was surprised!

(quoted from post at 19:57:17 01/14/22) 27 sounds like a lot!
Yes, 27 psi sounds way high for rear tractor tires. I'd expect 16 pounds or so to be the recommended pressure.. I usually don't check mine as the chloride is hard on gauges. i just do a visual check. If they bulge I will add a little air.

Drive till valve stem is up at the
top. Push valve needle in untill
nothing but air comes out (might be
just a tab bit of calcium come out
first). Then you can gauge it without
getting any of it in your gauge.
If filled with fluid right, fluid
should be lower than valve stem when
valve stem is up at the top. If not,
the wheel has to much fluid in it.
Of course, this referring to a tire a
few pounds low. Not flat.
Correct fluid fill, is a couple inches
below top of inner rim.

for one thing they require 14-16 psi. in those tires. i pull at the tractor pulls with 6 psi,... so what are u worried about????

Agree on 27 being a lot for R1s. I load mine up with the normal 3 pt load and adjust the air so that the tread is flat with the ground...concrete. Usually my heavier loads aren't on for that long and don't bulge my bias tires all that much so I don't change air pressure. Pressures run 13 give or take.

You're reading that 27PSI off the tire sidewall aren't you. Read closer, that is the MAX PSI, possibly for seating beads.

It's a little different for bias and radials but you set the pressure based on how heavy the tractor is. Without having facilities to weigh the tractor you can go by the footprint it makes on hard ground. The procedures are online somewhere.

What i have found with my S/MTA with 16.9x38 Firestone super all tracks at a tractor pull on a really good hard track that i get a far bette3r pull when my tires are 15-16 psi in the 6000 and up , i can't go down much more , to heavy for 5500 . I tried the low pressure and found that under pull the bars sorta roll back and under , so for the second hook i had time to go put more air in them as i really had nothing to loose , went back and took my second hook and she grabbed hold the track lifted the ft. a bit and dragged the sled out of the holes and made the full pull only tractor to get the sled out of the holes and make a full pull . Also by running low tire pressure you can ruin the side walls on a bias tire .

My 4020 manual shows 16 psi for 16.9-34 8 ply with little or no ballast and 24 psi with max. ballast or heavy rear mounted implement.
