520 John Deere

Curious guys, I have a nice 520 John Deere tractor, doing some spring maintenance on it.
Checking the transmission fluid. First, my manual does not show a place to check the
fluid level. Is there a check plug or valve? Second, this tractor is used very lightly
maybe a little mowing or spreading manure. Do you think it is necessary to change the
transmission fluid, or just add if necessary. Thanks for any advice.

When was it last changed? If all it is is basically a trailer queen type use I would change it every few years just for the condensation in the case making a lot of water accumulate in the transmission and hydraulic oil. Filter too. If you run it hard for a few days it will help to evaporate some of it out of the oil. Not all of it though. It needs hooked to a plow for a few weeks for best results.

There is a check plug between the flywheel and rear axle. (Left side as you are sitting on it). The plug looks like a 3/8 bolt, takes a 9/16 socket.

The operators manual does show the transmission oil level check plug..Plug takes a 9/16 wrench.. Oil should come out of plug hole.. It is located ahead the left brake and behind the flywheel.. Trans oil should look new, not creamy.. Can drain out any water by letting the tractor sit a day or so.. Then loosen Tran drain plug and see if you have water come out.. Dirty oil, put in new?? Use SAE 80-90 transmission oil--4 gallons.. Change oil in first reduction cover, too.. No filter to clean. or change..

After sitting over time condensation will settle out below the transmission and engine oils. You can drain off some of the condensation by cracking the drain plugs just enough to let the water drip out and re-tighten when oil starts dripping out.
