MESSICKS PARTS DIAGRAM NO. 4 REMOVABLE BAND..WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THAT.....THE BACK OF THIS MOWER IS TOTALLY CLOSED....WAS WONDERING WHY SOME DECKS ARE OPEN AN SOME CLOSED.... AN WAS THIS BAND USED TO OPEN IT UP........

Not sure about all. Had a 306 and the left side could be removed or left on. Mounted with bolts and tucked in where rear inclosing started. Less power to cut in heavy stuff removed or no care about how much was shredded up.

you can remove the band and mow, throwing the grass out that side, as the blades cut it off leaving it long for hay. With the side panel off, it will not carry the cuttings around under the deck shredding or mulching them up as it does with the side closed. And as D slater posted it uses less power in heavy material for general cutting as long as you aren't looking for it to be shredded.
