Expired Hand Sanitizer

I know, it doesn't go bad, but we've got a bunch at work that needs to disposed of. Little bottles, some are gel, some are liquid spray. Besides starting campfires and woodstove, etc, what else can I use it for? Does it mix with regular gasoline? Give it to a tractor puller for his alcohol tractor? There's 180 8oz bottles of the 80% liquid, and 108 4oz bottles of 65% gel.

Sterno?

Does it actually burn on it's own after lit?

I saw a gallon jug on the pharmacy counter with a hand pump on it for customers use.
The label said "not sterile" , sanitizer that is not sterile? ???

Give it to a charity with a write off!! Don't do those things with it. The composition will contain a cross section of components not good for combustion or the working of engines. From Michigan state Univ: Ethanol (ethyl alcohol),
Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol or 2-propanol), or
Benzalkonium chloride
The active ingredients can break apart the cell membranes of many bacteria and viruses, thus destroying them (1, 2).

Inactive ingredients:

Emollients (e.g., glycerin): help moisturize skin
Polyacrylate (e.g., sodium polyacrylate): helps to thicken and stabilizes the ingredients
Color
Fragrance: helps improve the scent
Water: carrier ingredient for the other active and inactive ingredients

as much as 25 to 30% can be water. the remaining gunk is not going to do good things inside engines, and it is not good for starting fires. Jim

.Good morning, 007: That note about not sterile probably means "don't drink it". Or maybe "don't put on open wounds".

It is a great degreaser for your hands, like after changing oil, changing tires. I keep some in my trucks. I Like those small bottles. joe

Squirt it into larger bottles to use up faster. I would not want to put it in an engine with some of the other components in hand sanitizer. Might better use it for tire mounting than to put it in an engine.

I still have (and use) some hand sanitizer I got in 2009, and it expired in 2012. It still smells like alcohol. What part of it actually goes bad? Is it actually harmful to use old hand sanitizer or just not as effective? I could understand maybe if it was an open container and the alcohol was allowed to evaporate off. But these are sealed bottles.

My workplace got cases of the stuff early on and we had lots of it around that supposedly expired. It works well to clean tools before putting them away.

A lot of stuff doesn't go bad but the plastic container starts to break down.(did you ever wonder why a water bottle had an expiration date) That is why.
