How to set the hitch on a plow?

What is the correct way to set the hitch on a pull type plow so it will pull and plow right? And do the rear wheels on the tractor need to be set at a certain width? Tractor and plow is a Case DC and Case 3-14 Centennial plow. I got this plow at an auction and as you can see it is way out of adjustment and doesn't even pull straight.

Here are some snippets of a pdf file that I have on setting up a variety of ploughs. These pics relate to the parts of the document that relates to drag ploughs.

I believe the right wheel of the plow should be in line with the right rear wheel of the tractor. They should both run in the dead furrow. The bar running diagonally at the front of the plow is how you make that adjustment. That is the reason for all of the holes in that bar. To be set exactly correct the hitch should be in the center of the drawbar which means you may have to adjust the rear wheel spacing.

According to the top picture, the tractor has to be widened out, the right wheel, could be moved out at least 8 inches,or the first bottom wont wont have any dirt to turn!!!!

Get an operators manual for the plow. It will explain how to adjust the tractor wheels, the drawbar, and the plow.

Follow 550 Doug's PDF. Your rear wheels are set too wide and the long bar on the plow hitch needs moved over to line up with the center of the middle bottom. Keep in mind that 14 plows were design to plow at 1/2 of the width of cut- 7. The 2 levers are to set the plow level when plowing. When laying out a land, raise the furrow wheel lever most of the way up, set the land wheel to cut about 7 deep. After laying out the land, lower the furrow wheel lever enough to make the plow pull level. When set correctly, all furrows should be even with the last pass. The front bottom needs to set to cut 14, not 10 and not 16 or 18. the rolling cutters should be set 3/4 of an inch wider than the plow share and run 1/2 of the depth of cut. Keep adjusting the levers until you can't tell from looking across the field which pass you made before. You will probably need to add a wheel weight or 2 for traction. Plowing is a lost art and is fun when everything is set right. It would be easier if I could be there to help you get it set up instead of trying to type it all out. Good luck, post pictures when you get it going. Chris

Here is a link to a pull type John Deere manual online.
Should tell you everything you need to know, step by step, including minor field adjustmentd once you start plowing

be nice to see a proper picture with the plow straight behind the tractor, so both units are straight. and if you only have a bit to plow just slide the draw bar over so it pull straight. plus the plow hitch can be adjusted.

Thank you. It would be nice to have one on one training with someone who knows how to properly set and match a plow to the tractor. I think you are a few hours from me, I'm close to Rend Lake

you dont move the tractor wheel you move the plow hitch so the tongue of the plow is centered on the middle bottom that will move the plow over so the tractor wheel is good

Looks like they tried to set the hitch for an onland pull. That would make the plow pull to the left as you plowed with it and pull hard. IT would also wear out landslides faster. Getting the plow to align with the tractor just needs the hitch set better by moving the hitch to the plow over to center of plow bottoms and then setting the brace to keep it lined up with the drawbar. Tractor is fine. If just plowing a garden or small patch it could be used as is. If plowing a bigger field then adjustment will be your friend.

Look up this extension publication on line, it will go through all the proper steps to set your tractor and plow so they work well together. You have a great set up there.

Make sure that the has been prepared with new parts , or these set up s will not work in heavy soil the plow will rise out or drifting left or right , you can see the wear in hitch linkages to prove it.

OK,i can go along with that, hes got to pull from the the other side of the cross piece,on the hitch of plow !!!
