Planting grass and pasture

Is it worth trying to get grass pasture and field lanes established right now? We had several power lines trenched in through our farm and I need to reseed about an acre. Going to plant some oats and grass. Is it to hot and dry right now to get a good stand? Most alfalfa that is fall seeded is planted mid to late Aug. I could just drill some oats and come back latter with a notill drill. Any suggestions? Located southwest WI. Would like to get something started to cut down on erosion. Tom

Here at the bottom of kentucky, grass won't stand much chance this time of year. I just sowed some millet last week and it is already up. It likes hot weather. It will come off in time sow grass this fall. Plus it is 1/2 the cost of KY 31 fescue.

Usually around here seeding was recommended through April in the spring then starting back up up from August 10 into September. This was done mostly to insure moisture to start the crop but today we live in a time of modern weather forecasting. A caveat here on the clay is it is best to have 3 soaking rains during the warmer months to insure the seeding takes hold. If you have a bunch of rain in the forecast I would say go for it now.

It may work. If you do go ahead, spread a layer of straw/hay/compost/ old manure that is mellow over it. That will keep it from burning up too fast and hold everything in place.

Being you are in southern WI, I would recommend wai
ting a few weeks, early to mid-August would be a good time and allow adequate growth going into winter.

The old saying around here (southern Indiana) is you only plant grass/hay in months with an R in them.
