Old case starter advice requested

Hello guys, I have an 89 case crawler. Starter quit cranking
and was just clicking. I took it apart and the contacts where
the plunger hit were very worn. Ordered nippondesco
contacts and they were too small. Two auto parts stores
couldnt help. I ordered a brand new starter from this site.
Bolted it on today charges the battery and same single load
click when the gear slams forward and no crank. Advice on
proceeding from here appreciated!

Is the engine locked up or hard to turn? If not take the starter to a rebuild shop. Check all connections for tightness and corrosion. Put a volt meter from the starter power connection to ground and check the voltage when trying to start. Also check voltage across the solenoid when trying to start. You'll be looking for a voltage drop along the current path. Do you have a Case IH dealer near by that can check the starter and solenoid?

had starter problems with a 706. I had a low voltage problem between the starter button and the solenoid.

Take the starter out, leave it wired up, and try it. If it works, try turning your engine by hand, maybe a pry bar on the flywheel. If the engine turns feely, clean where it bolts to the engine well so you get a good ground.

If it doesn't turn, check volts to your solenoid and starter. If you don't have proper voltage, start working your way back on the wiring. Good luck.

That is NOT an ..old.. Case he he. I will recommend to use the self diagnostic tool the machine came with to help you. If the machine has working lights use them to help you figure out your problem. With the lights on when you energize the starter crank circuit do the lights stay nearly the same brightness, or do they dim or go out! If they stay nearly the same brightness the problem is likely in the starter or the start circuit. If they go dim it is likely the battery is bad or low on charge and less likely a connection. If they go out it is likely a connection but could be a bad battery as well.

Some machines have a relay ahead of the actual solenoid on the starter that sends current to the solenoid on the starter when activated.

Are you SURE you are actually hearing the solenoid on the starter activate?

I'd look those battery cables over real close. Not only the connection to the battery/starter/solenoid but the connection between the cable and the connector.

Thanks good advice as usual. It has no working lights but I did replace the battery ends with the kind that use a little bolt and wing nuts. The old positive side was pretty ate up. Its big cable 1 gauge maybe not enough current is getting through. Time to find the old meter. Just moved everything is scattered. Thank you

And the cables themselves, hold the cable with both hands and bend them and feel for crunchyness happening inside the insulation. If they don't flex smoothly the copper inside is likely junk.

How about the cable end? What did you use to fix the end?
