International S1900 gages not working

I bought a 88 IH S1900 truck and the 3 gages on left (Amp, temp, and oil pressure not working. Where do I look?

Most likely if all three are not working the plug in the back of the dash is either pulled out or mouse cut the wires.

There could be an instrument fuse, could be a bad ground for the instruments.

Check the plug where the harness connects to the panel.

You say amp meter, did you mean volt meter? Big difference in how they wire. If it's a volt meter, it should have battery voltage anytime the ignition is on. That would be a place to start checking.

Some International trucks use a shunt that is located in a harness no where near the ammeter. I was a service manager for light/medium IH trucks. Jim

the dashs on the s series was not to good,, they are plug in gauges, take the face plate off and see if the ones not working are loose, if that does not help. as someone suggested take out cluster in one piece and move plug in with key on and see if you can find the sweet spot

The S series were notorious for dash failure. New ones are available on the net and there are some rebuilders that you can send yours in to.

I am pretty sure those had a volt gauge, not an amp gauge. I used to pull the panel/cluster back, unplug the harness, turn the key on, and check for voltage in the harness. Turn the key off, and verify no voltage(to prove it is key power). Trace the mating terminal to the cluster circuit board, and follow it to the gauges. Plug the harness back in and see if you have voltage at the gauges. If you do and they don't work, look at the volt gauge and the opposite terminal should be ground. If there are 3, one is for the light. Verify continuity to ground. If none, trace it back to the harness and see if you have ground there. I used to remember which wires in the harness plug were what, but that was long ago. I actually would bet the terminals on the plug are not making good contact. Mark.
